At Ashby, we're building powerful, delightful, high quality software to help companies be the absolute best at hiring. Prior to starting Ashby, our Co-Founder and CEO, Benji, experienced the limitations of current products first hand. We believe the most promising productivity improvements have yet to be built, and we have a relentless focus to make them a reality.

We’ve not launched publicly yet, but we already have happy (paying) customers who prefer us over our competition, including: Opendoor, Plaid, Figma, Airtable, Snyk, and Benchling. We’re also backed by great investors, including YCombinator, Elad Gil, and Lachy Groom. We’ll share more once we meet.

Our Philosophy

Here are a few key points that should give you an idea of what it is like to work with us:

  • We invest a lot in common building blocks that allow us to build powerful and customizable products fast. At the core of Ashby is a set of common components (analytics modelling and query language, policy engine, workflow engine) which we are constantly improving.

  • Customers use Ashby every day, so we put a lot of effort into designing products that are approachable to beginners but mastered & extended by power users. In many ways, spreadsheets set the bar here.

  • We strongly believe that small teams with very talented people (and the right work environment) deliver much better performance than teams with large headcount. We hire and compensate accordingly.

  • Our users’ pain is our pain. Engineers conduct user interviews, Slack with our customers, and work closely with them to define, design, and implement solutions.

  • We value each other’s time so we can maximize our impact. We accomplish this by doing lots of research and writing specs before building, investing in automation, and practicingefficient and deliberate communication. Engineers average 36 hours of focus time per week (and it’s only increased over time).

About this Role

We believe the best engineering leaders are great engineers who enjoy the challenge of building fantastic engineering teams. While the best engineering leaders don’t code day-to-day, excellence in the craft enables them to identify great engineers and help build a culture that enables engineers to thrive.

At Ashby, we believe engineers can make as much impact as managers through technical leadership. Our engineering leaders build an environment where engineers make important product, design, and technical decisions with autonomy.

We’ve gathered an experienced, talented, and collaborative team. As one of our first engineering managers, you’ll be managing 5 to 10 senior+ engineers. You’ll get to focus on what we find exciting: building the industry-best engineering culture. This includes candidate experience, diversity and inclusion, engineer onboarding, and making on-call a joy (seriously, we think it can be done).

We prefer candidates with at least 1.5 years of experience in engineering management. We’re happy to consider candidates with strong technical or product leadership who have less experience.

  • You have a track record of delivering projects by cutting scope and reducing risk rather than compromising on quality.

  • You build empathy with engineers by jumping in code to fix small bugs, helping debug issues, and reviewing PRs.

  • You actively improve your leadership skills. Soliciting feedback, reading books, and watching talks are regular activities for you. 

Examples of Things You’ll Work On

  • Design and improve interview tracks based on feedback from candidates and the team. We pride ourselves on having thoughtful interviews that simulate actually working with us!

  • Provide feedback on product and technical specs to help engineers identify where they can cut scope or improve quality.  

  • Improve our on-call rotation by keeping documentation up to date, soliciting feedback from the team, and helping engineer-led initiatives get implemented.

  • Write blog posts about our culture and processes to attract talent. Encourage and help engineers write about their work.
