What does BotBuilt do?

We build robots that build homes.

We work with traditional home builders to make their construction process faster, safer, and more precise. We've already shipped multiple homes worth of framing components for many different kinds of houses. Our building process is enabled by a cross-functional team that leverages the latest advancements in machining, hardware design, robotics, computer vision, optimization, and algorithm design to automate the build process.

What you'll do at BotBuilt

We are seeking a diligent and adventurous mechanical engineer to provide mechanical engineering leadership and expertise as we grow our human and robot teams.

• Lead the design of prototype components, subsystems, and proofs-of-concept for technologies that will revolutionize the construction of homes. (e.g. gripper prototypes, novel lumber handling mechanisms, locomotion platforms.)
• Develop concepts and requirements in an interdisciplinary team.
• Create subsystem CAD and ensure quality among other contributors.
• Perform engineering calculations to support design choices.
• Support the definition of structural and thermal analyses.
• Lead cross-functional design reviews.
• Write test procedures for subsystems.
• Work with machinists and technicians to construct systems.
• Support process development and documentation for the mechanical team.
• Contribute to the hiring process of future mechanical engineers.
• Contribute to root cause analysis for system and subcomponent failures.
• Mentor junior mechanical engineers.
• Track the status of tasks and document design work using Jira and Confluence.
• Deliver quality results within defined schedules, budgets, and priorities.

Your qualifications

You love designing mechanisms that have an impact, are capable of communicating with a diverse audience, and enjoy working with ambitious and curious teammates. Your creativity and vision allow you to build systems from a blank piece of paper. Your intuition and creativity are balanced by a deep analytical understanding. You build because you're driven by a passion for systems that make the world a better place and a love for things that move.

• Self-motivated, high-performing team player.
• BSME + 8 years relevant industry experience OR MSME + 6 years relevant industry experience OR PhD + 3 years relevant industry experience.
• Expertise in electromechanical system design (mechanisms, actuators, thermal management, electronics integration, and structures).
• Fabrication experience, and a portfolio of projects (experience with projects related to wood is a bonus.)
• Proficient in mechanical CAD software (Onshape preferred, Experience with CAD surfacing and cable routing preferred)
• Proficient at creating mechanical drawings and GD&T.
• Experience with test design, implementation, and reporting.
• Physical demands – This role requires the ability to switch between sitting at a computer and sometimes standing, walking, bending, reaching, ascending and descending ladders, and moving objects (up to 50 lbs).
