About the role

About Carbonfact

Carbonfact gives low-carbon products a competitive advantage and shifts consumer demand to low-carbon alternatives. Since the fashion industry is responsible for ~5% of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), we believe Carbonfact can avoid hundreds of millions of tons of GHG every year.

We do that by helping fashion retailers and brands put a carbon tag on the products they sell.

Carbonfact was launched in June 2021 by Marc Laurent (ex Founder of Kerala Ventures, investor of 15 startups including Doctolib and Malt), Martin Daniel (ex Data Science Lead at Airbnb) and Romain Champourlier (ex CTO of JobTeaser).

40+ fashion brands from all over the world are partnering with Carbonfact and several major fashion retailers are currently deploying Carbonfact (see an example here). We raised $2m from Y Combinator, Alven and top angel investors and are now looking for someone to accelerate in building our technology.

Your role

As the second software engineer to join the founding team, you'll work hand-in-hand with Romain and Mickaël to create Carbonfact's technology platform.

You’ll also participate in growing the engineering team once you arrive, with at least another hire in the second half of 2022.

This means taking part in the design, architecture, implementation and operation of the different components, like:

  • our product data ingestion / ETL platform: retrieves and consolidates data from many sources (brand/retailer product inventories, websites...) to create the best-possible representation of a product,
  • the carbon engine, transforming product data into carbon footprint assessments,
  • endpoints where we display the carbon information: a widget embedded by brands and retailers, our website, etc.

A few examples of the key challenges you will be working on:

  • extend from our first product category (sneakers) to another one, then hundreds, by generalizing our carbon model implementation,
  • generate product data for all the products we track by processing thousands, then millions of data points,
  • handle the data processing as well as displaying the carbon information in demanding environments (e.g. big e-commerce retailers) by building a rock-solid infrastructure.

The technologies we started with (and you'll have a key role in changing if needed):

  • Typescript and React everywhere,
  • NestJS, NextJS and ReactAdmin frameworks,
  • Prisma / PostgreSQL for dealing with data,
  • Python for data analytics and data science,
  • Vercel / Heroku / DigitalOcean to host it.

What we look for

  • At least 6 years of experience in software engineering, mostly on fullstack or backend positions, with frontend skills: we intend to build a team of fullstack engineers rather than split between backend and frontend.
  • Product mindset: need to be able to drive feature development while looking at the business impact.
  • Striving for quality and maintainability: knowing when it's needed, skilled in making durable and high-quality software. You'll run what you'll build anyway, so better do it right.
  • Pragmatic and focused on impact, you know how to navigate uncertainty, you're ready to switch priorities frequently (and maybe delete your code if our business focus changes).
  • Humble and collaborative: not afraid from making mistakes, giving and receiving feedback, and showing vulnerability.
  • At ease with remote work and asynchronous written communication.
  • Fluent in English (we’re building an international team), CET +/-1.

Why you might be excited about us:

  • Our vision and plans are big. We’re aiming to measure our impact in hundreds of millions of tons of CO2eq avoided.
  • You’ll work in a fast-paced environment: Carbonfact didn’t exist 8 months ago and is now used by 40+ brands from all over the world and several fashion retailers (see here a first Carbonfact module).
  • We love to engage in healthy dialogue and debate, and expect everyone to get on board when a decision is reached so we can move forward as a team.
  • We leverage a creative technological approach to have an impact. Join us if you want to blend machine learning, software engineering, marketplace design, causal inference for a tangible positive impact on the world.
  • We are building a remote-first culture enabling Carbonfact employees to live and work from anywhere (as long as we all are in similar time zones).
