About the role

Machine learning is at the core of Casetext’s mission to make the world’s laws free and understandable. We’re looking for experienced Software Engineers to help us build the next generation of professional legal research tools. The data team at Casetext is developing groundbreaking technology for legal document recommendation, search, text generation, and information extraction.

About the role

As a Software Engineer at Casetext, you will help build and maintain the backend services that empower our Machine Learning team to deliver cutting-edge legal research products to our customers. You will work on critical human-in-the-loop systems that are responsible for data labeling and reviewing the output of our models. You will also assist in the design and implementation of our ML features infrastructure, which is responsible for providing our team with easy access to high quality training data and data features. Although this is not a research role, you should feel comfortable and conversant with basic machine learning and data science concepts. This role is well-suited for someone who wants to learn practical machine learning skills on the job.

Responsibilities At least three years experience with all of the following:

  1. Developing software in Python
  2. Developing backend web applications and/or REST APIs
  3. At least one year working with a SQL/relational database (Postgres is a plus) Writing queries
  4. Some experience with schema design and implementation is preferred
  5. Experience deploying applications on Amazon Web Services and/or Google Cloud Platform

Preferred skills and experience:

  1. Experience with some of the following skills will make a resume stand out:
  2. Working familiarity with the Python “data science stack” (e.g. pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, etc.)
  3. Reading and writing common data formats (JSON, XML, CSV, etc.)
  4. Data mining/information extraction
  5. Defining and deploying Docker containers

Bonus points if you have experience with the following:

  1. NLP libraries
  2. ML metrics (e.g. precision, recall, f1)
  3. Experience working with legal/policy/government data
