About the role

We are hiring for this role in San Francisco (this is not a remote position)

Ciro processes billions of data points from dozens of public and proprietary sources to deliver near real-time updates to sales teams about their prospects. As a Founding Backend Engineer at Ciro, you will work closely with the founders to design and lead Ciro’s data product. You will see all parts of the business and shape Ciro’s culture from the earliest stages.

You will:

  • Build high-performance data processing pipelines leveraging Python data science libraries, PostgreSQL, and distributed computing frameworks like Spark.
  • Develop the standards and automated procedures for database and ETL design, including management, monitoring, upgrades, quality control, and maintenance.
  • Work closely with the founders and early customers to set product and technical direction for the company.
  • Play a lead role in defining Ciro’s engineering culture as we grow.

Sample projects you might work on:

  • Build a pipeline to aggregate realtime events from business social media accounts and news APIs and push them to Ciro’s users.
  • Design workflows and build data pipelines to seamlessly integrate data from Ciro’s human computation team with programmatic data sources.
  • Design and build a machine learning model to predict whether data points from two disparate sources refer to the same underlying business.

Some of the skills we’re excited about:

  • 5+ years of software backend/data engineering experience, including familiarity with data modeling, ETL, schema and system design, roadmap planning, batch processing, implementation, maintenance, and documentation.
  • Productive, resourceful, and effective at problem-solving.
  • Sound knowledge about database concepts such as transactions, indexing, concurrency.
  • Strong product sense.
  • Ability to balance effective execution with a high bar for engineering excellence.

About the interview

Our goal is to make this as simple and enjoyable for you as possible, while respecting your time.

  1. Intro call: a 20-25 min chat with our CEO or CTO about the position, your background, your motivation and all the initial questions you might have.
  2. Take-home assignment: 2-hour async programming assignment, solving the typical kinds of problems we’re addressing in our real codebase.
  3. Onsite: Meet each of the founders in person - we want to get to know you and you probably want to get to know us, so we can make sure that we'll all be thrilled to work together.
  4. Offer: will be made and you'll join Ciro on our journey!

Why you should join Ciro

Sales is about building relationships 🤝 — but you wouldn’t know it from watching most sales teams today. The average sales rep spends 1-2 days per week researching and list-building instead of spending time with customers.

We’re building the most comprehensive index of small businesses in the world, combined with elegant software that gives salespeople superpowers. Our stodgy competitors (e.g., Dunn and Bradstreet) have been around for 100 years and have not innovated in decades. Modern sales teams deserve better!

Ciro is a tight-knit team of engineers, sales execs, and product managers with experience from Stanford, Google, Bain & Co, Brown, Berkeley, and BuildZoom. Our CEO and COO have both served as VPs of Sales at high-growth SaaS startups and understand our domain deeply. We are backed by some of the best investors in the world, including Y Combinator, SV Angel, CRV, and the founders of Flexport, BuildZoom, and Tegus.

If our mission speaks to you, we’d be delighted to meet you. Join us for the adventure of a lifetime 🚀
