About the role

About us: Help logistics transition to a sustainable future!

Hypermile is a UK SME technology provider building cutting-edge solutions to enable efficient driving for fleets using AI. The company was conceived in late 2019 and is backed by leading Silicon Valley incubator Y Combinator, who were the first investors in successful startups such as Stripe, Airbnb, Dropbox, Cruise. The company has a world-class team including engineers which have built industrial R&D technologies, having previously worked in autonomous vehicles (Lyft Level 5/Toyota), automotive (AVL, Continental) computer vision (Amazon, Microsoft) and semiconductor-based (Graphcore) companies. Hypermile’s co-founders have PhDs/advanced degrees from Oxford and UCL, have written a best-selling textbook on machine learning, and led ML/computer vision teams at companies such as Mudano (acquired by Accenture) and Pupil. We have won a range of grants including Innovate UK and the EU Commission’s Horizon 2020 and collaborate with industry bodies including CCAV and Zenzic.

We are developing Co-Pilot, the first AI-powered energy saving advanced driver assist system (ADAS) specifically optimised for commercial vehicles (diesel & electric). This is a single, cost-effective solution to address how road logistics firms approach the problem of inconsistent driver behaviour, impacting fuel/energy consumption and emissions. Driver behaviour greatly affects vehicle energy usage; good driving can save up to 20% energy (NREL 2021) - a potential saving of €1.5B/yr for UK hauliers alone.

What you’ll be doing (not all of these will apply every week):

  • Be a trusted thought-partner and a liaison to the team and external contacts, including customers, partners, and investors
  • Help prioritize and execute mission-critical projects and initiatives
  • Amplify the founders’ decisions and time by giving strategic advice and leading the execution of key initiatives such as partnerships, events, investor relations, and more
  • Have excellent verbal communication and writing skills, both for internal notes and external communication
  • Synthesize large amounts of information from many different fields and have the ability to prioritize, organize and create action items with this information, this includes preparing project updates on Innovate UK / H2020 etc.
  • Employee logistics (new hires, Visas etc.)
  • Office maintenance and management (managing all necessary policies/insurances)
  • Expense reconciliation and other purchasing support (POs, license renewals, etc)

What we can offer

  • High growth environment (we have grown from 2 to 11 in less than a year and have even much more ambitious plans for the future)
  • DOE: Competitive Salary and Generous “American-style” Equity Package (you’ll own a substantial portion of the business upon finishing 1 year vesting!)
  • Working with an ambitious, agile team where all the software is in-house. Truly being part of a high growth Silicon Valley-style startup story
  • Making a real difference and enabling you to set up the business operations alongside the co-founders
  • No bullshit management culture: we move fast, best idea always wins and everyone (incl. founders) frequently get frequent feedback
  • Potential for you to become Chief Operating Officer or other high impact role
  • £2,000 personal budget to set up laptop / monitor / headphones however you want
  • Flexible working

What we are looking for

  • Someone who can scale alongside the organisation (we have grown from 2 to 11 in less than a year and expect to grow even more in the future)
  • Someone who is not afraid to get their hands dirty (we all wear multiple hats)
  • Someone who is familiar with the commercial side of logistics industry with deep understanding of logistics and supply chain operations including procurement and sourcing of new technologies
  • Someone who understands that tactics eats strategy for breakfast (Speed is everything and Done is better than perfect)
  • Someone who will drive the adoption and execution (and ideally formulation) new sales strategies and processes
  • Ability to achieve high results from themselves and soon others
  • Someone who has excellent communication skills and the energy and dynamism required to lead and inspire teams to deliver against their targets.

Bonus points

Automotive (OEM/Tier 1 or 2) experience

  • High-growth startup experience ideally including scaling teams from individuals to dozens
  • Substantial experience with novel technologies (ideally from ideation) and engineering-heavy teams
  • An established figure in the commercial side of logistics industry / supply chain operations who has a wide range of industry contacts and can speak about current trends in logistics and supply chain with authority

Why you should join Hypermile

We are building level 2 autonomous systems for trucks and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). That way they are safer, more fuel efficient and easier to control. Our solution can be retrofitted to existing trucks and is designed to augment the drivers skills. Think better Tesla Autopilot, but for trucks. We are backed by YC, Innovate UK grants as well as Horizon 2020 funding.

We are unique in Europe and we are solving one of the greatest challenges of our time. The company was founded by engineers so we focus on prototyping and shipping quality products. We are building a world-class team that is mission driven and motivated by the impact and practicality, not theoretical results like many of our competitors.
