About the role

Who We Are

Instamenu is building a real world payment platform where the ownership is distributed back to the participants. Think a Web3 version of Square.

We are starting with restaurants, specifically food trucks, and have spent the last year building a full featured point-of-sale and have replaced Square in a handful of businesses.

By distributing ownership of the payment network back to the participating restaurants we make for a virtuous growth cycle in an environment where the restaurant industry is ready for change and more control over their data and destiny.

We are currently a very efficient team of three looking to add a fourth! We are remote based out of Austin, San Francisco, and Boston.

We are backed by Y Combinator and Global Founders Capital.

What You’ll Work On

We have some really fun design projects up next where we need a fresh (but highly functional!) build out:

Loyalty Rewards System

Physical punchcards are so fun and tactile and, frankly, hard to beat for their performance when looking at how much joy they give customers, how they bring customers back, and their ease of use.

How can we make this digital without killing the magic?

Starbucks does a great job. Square’s is a snoozefest.

What should ours look like?

Gift Card Integration

Like Loyalty Rewards, a well-designed Gift Card system can take something that’s transactional and turn it into something magical. And gift cards can be such a powerful financial tool for restaurants.

We need to be able to provide basic operation that fulfills restaurants’ needs, but there is definitely an opportunity to make gift cards fun and memorable.

Mobile Web Ordering

I (Nick Evans) personally use Square web ordering to order my coffee ahead every single morning at my local coffee shop in Austin (Merit), and it’s SO PAINFUL. Why are there so many clicks?? It’s the same order every day.

We have an app now, but we’re getting strong feedback that web is required, so now is an opportunity to build this fresh.

DoorDash and some others are pretty good ordering experiences. How can we use existing systems that work well and improve upon them?

Beyond these upcoming projects, you will own all design at the company including brand and marketing.

Who You Are

You are someone who is genuinely passionate about design and how it can be used as a tool to build a product that people love and a company that grows.

It would be very nice if you lived in Austin, but it’s not required. All of our current restaurants are in Austin, so it would be nice to be able to go on site.

We most value an individual’s general competence, drive, and dependability since all specific necessary skills can be learned, but here is a list of experience and skills that will catch our eye:

Requirements

3+ years experience

Have shipped real products and iterated based on user feedback

Able to wear multiple hats

Comfortable using and creating design systems

Nice to Haves

Experience coding, especially front end dev/React

Experience designing for mobile, web, and tablet

Experience in other areas of business like marketing, sales, management

Experience working in a restaurant

Side projects you can show us

The Role

You’ll work directly with the founders and the rest of the founding team to define and build features that ship.

We start each day with a brief virtual standing meeting to plan and discuss design, dev, and testing progress.

You will own the UX and UI design of the product and will be responsible for ensuring that it gets built the way you are envisioning it.

We currently use Figma for designs and Linear and Notion for tracking, but you’ll have the freedom to use whatever tools work for you.

Every 8 weeks the entire team travels to Austin to meet with our current restaurants and some team building activities 🤠
