About the role

Inversion was founded in 2021 with the mission to build the first affordable, high cadence return capability for the commercial and defense space industries. With launching to space becoming cheap and frequent, comparable options for return must become available to allow for a robust economy in space. We believe in a future where returning from space is as common as launching to space. Inversion is building reentry vehicles faster and cheaper than ever before through a focus on simplicity.

Software is an essential part of Inversion. Each step of every mission we fly, from orbit to landing, must be planned and executed by flight software. As a flight software engineer, you'll work across engineering disciplines to design, develop, and test software that can function robustly in an extreme environment. Have complete ownership of systems from cradle-to-grave and help build a new class of space vehicle set to change how humanity utilizes space.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and test software for spacecraft, including drivers, networking, and attitude control
  • Work with vendors to interface with sensors, actuators, and other hardware components
  • Assist in creating and executing tests, including HITL (hardware in the loop) testing, integration testing, and unit testing
  • Assist with ground control and mission operations
  • Assist in architecting flight software for future vehicles

Basic Qualifications:

  • 4+ years' of experience writing and implementing software
  • 2+ years' of experience working with microcontrollers, especially with real-time systems

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • Written drivers for serial protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN
  • Experience with STM32 and FreeRTOS
  • Comfortable wiring up electronics and debugging with an oscilloscope or logic analyzer
  • Comfortable using git for version control and code review
  • Experience with CI to automate build artifacts and testing
  • Experience in aerospace or similar industries

Additional Requirements:

Position may require extended work hours and weekend work.

ITAR Compliance:

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. About Inversion Space

Inversion is a startup based in Los Angeles founded by SpaceX, Relativity, and ABL Space Systems alum. Inversion is building low-cost space capsules, which are ~4ft in diameter, that will return cargo back to Earth. With the booming launch vehicle industry, it has never been easier and cheaper to get up to space. But these trips are still mainly one-way. With launch solved and improving, now is the time to build an affordable way back from space. Inversion is filling this gap. Inversion’s mission is to build the first affordable, high cadence return capability for the commercial and defense industries. Inversion is the latest company to come out of Y Combinator, a business accelerator with alumni like Relativity, Boom Supersonic, Airbnb, and many others. Inversion is looking for incredibly talented and driven engineers who want to work on a small team, own systems from start to finish, and make a massive impact.
