About Us:

Iron Ox is reimagining the modern farm, utilizing robotics and AI to grow fresh, consistent, and responsibly farmed produce for everyone. Our experienced team of growers, plant scientists, engineers, and innovators are passionate about deeply understanding and developing this new wave of technology to feed an ever-growing population.

Our mission at Iron Ox is dedicated to addressing some of the most significant issues in food security, now and in the future. We’re focused on sustainable, scalable food production for a changing climate and an ever-growing population.

From the development of multiple robot platforms, to our own custom hydroponic, seeding, and harvesting systems, to our data-based farm feedback loop, we are taking a system-level approach to creating the ideal farm. As we continue to develop and scale our robotic greenhouse operations, we want to make sure that the code that operates our systems is user-friendly, structured, well ordered, maintainable, and meets the needs of all of those who depend on it.

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to grow (HA! a food pun!) and lead our team of backend and frontend engineers, as well as drive the diverse software projects needed to realize our vision for an optimized and intelligent farm.

The technical side:

You will own our efforts to develop, deploy, and maintain production-quality code that runs on the robots and in the cloud, as well as our three-tier web applications used both inside and outside our farms. Generalists will thrive in this role; we are looking for a leader who is able to support engineers working on cross-functional projects that integrate firmware, high-level algorithms, and web infrastructure, all coming together to create a complete product. (It’s not required that you have experience in all of these areas; just that you feel comfortable supporting engineers working in this environment.)

The people side:

This is a dynamic environment and requires managing a team with diverse skill sets as well as closely collaborating with hardware, growing, and operations teams. You will need to not only roll up your sleeves and solve the day-to-day problems that never stop sprouting up, but also make time to plant the seeds that will bear longer, more strategic fruit in future seasons. (And you'll need to help us find more farmy puns for job descriptions, of course.) Most of all, as a leader, you’re passionate about creating a productive and collaborative work environment for your team.

(Some of) What you will do here:

  • Lead a growing team of 5-10 highly motivated and talented software engineers
  • Drive a goal-based software development process focused on delivering releases to systems deployed across our growing operation (making actual food!)
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other groups including (but not limited to) product management, quality, hardware, automation, plant science, robotics, data science, and operations
  • Help to assess, create, and execute on hiring plans
  • Cultivate an environment of collaboration, transparency and passion for technical excellence
  • Develop, train, and mentor software engineering staff
  • Help the team make decisions, keep moving forward, and propose changes and improvements to promote scalable, reliable, and maintainable technologies

You are an ideal candidate for our team if you value:

  • Collaboration and consensus-building as patterns for problem-solving
  • Transparency in the face of ambiguous or difficult situations
  • “Getting stuff done” through simple, pragmatic iteration and an unwavering focus on product needs
  • Demonstrating a high level of curiosity and keeping abreast of the latest technologies
  • Taking a proactive nature to resolve problems
  • Challenging the status quo, when it makes sense to do so

To be successful, you should have:

  • 10+ years of developing and shipping production software
  • 5+ years of leading engineering teams including building product roadmaps, running agile processes, performance management, conflict resolution ,and career development
  • A genuine passion for management, and a desire to build the best management practice possible
  • Experience building cohesive teams; including sourcing, recruiting, interviewing and closing exceptional engineers
  • Strong communication and analytical skills
  • A commitment to fostering inclusion and diversity within your team and the larger organization
  • You remember enough about writing code that you can conduct a solid code review
  • BS or MS in Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent work experience
  • Comfort with cloud/frontend and on-device development
  • Experience managing engineers that develop in C++, Python, React, Sass
  • Experience with development tools and technologies such as AWS, Postgres, Docker, OpenAPI, Jest, Ansible

It would make your job easier (but it isn't required) if you have...

  • Experience with products that combine hardware in software
  • Familiarity with robotics, machine vision, or machine learning
  • Familiarity with ROS
  • Experience with Python, C++ programming
  • Experience with frontend development
  • Experience working in a startup environment
  • An interest in agriculture
  • The ability to find a spider on your keyboard an amusing anecdote, as opposed to something that induces terror
