Kingdom Supercultures is transforming natural microbial cultures into a new class of technology for consumer product manufacturers. We’re building a state-of-the-art platform to aggregate, characterize, and assemble natural microbes into new combinations (“Supercultures”), which are used by our customers to make plant-based cheeses with authentic dairy tastes, lower-alcohol wines with full flavor, personal care products with natural functional ingredients, and much more. Along the way, we’re developing new field of microbial community design, driven by a diverse team of world-class scientists.

We’re in active R&D projects with some of the largest manufacturers in the food, beverage, and personal care industries. Our natural cultures are replacing artificial ingredients, improving sustainability and nutrition, and unlocking entirely new value propositions. We’re backed by Y-Combinator and other top venture capital investors.

We’re looking for a Senior Scientist – Microscopy to join our founding scientific team of biologists, biochemists, bioengineers, and computational scientists. This individual will develop and apply high throughput imaging and analysis approaches to measure microbial identity, phenotype and ecology to power design of Supercultures across food and personal care applications.


This is a full time, in-person role at our state-of-the-art headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. In this role, you will:

• Lead development of Kingdom’s microbial imaging platform

• Evaluate new microscopy technologies and develop and validate experimental pipelines (sample preparation, fluorescent/confocal microscopy) and computational analysis approaches (image analysis, segmentation, unsupervised and supervised machine learning)

• Lead Superculture design projects utilizing Kingdom’s overall platform and the imaging platform

• Act as the primary liaison for the team to customers

• Analyze and communicate resulting data with data science and statistical approaches


• Track record of creative scientific and/or engineering work related to microscopy and image analysis

• Deep domain knowledge of microscopy including sample preparation, high content imaging instruments, and imaging analysis through preprocessing, segmentation and quantification

• Experience building storing and managing large datasets and developing machine learning tools in Tensorflow, PyTorch or equivalent

• Demonstrated experience in delivering on complex technical outcomes, and leading and contributing to a team environment

• Ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot complex biological and technical issues on the fly

• PhD in bioengineering, biology, systems biology, microbiology, computer science or equivalent

• OR 3-5 years of relevant industry experience
