Lab Automation Engineer at Known Medicine
About the role
Known Medicine is finding the right treatment for every cancer patient and the right drug for every cancer. We run experiments at scale in our automated lab, built to enable better machine learning based predictions as we grow our dataset.
We’re generating millions of images of patient cells responding to different cancer treatments. Each sample run allows us to better understand not just that patient’s response, but to make better inferences the next time. Our insights hinge on the quality, consistency, and quantity of samples we run, a reason why our automated lab is a cornerstone of the company. You will have a massive impact on driving our mission forward, working with biologists, data scientists, and software engineers to create the world’s biggest 3D cell culture dataset. As our first automation engineer, your responsibilities will include:
Enable scale: program our automated equipment to perform everything from organoid creation to adding drugs to image acquisition and precisely document every step. Work alongside laboratory scientists to streamline processes.
Debug robots: keep our lab automation running like a well oiled machine. Collaborate with other teams to optimize procedures and repair automation issues when needed.
Build the future: we are expanding the platform to allow for ever greater capacity to run samples. Sourcing, demoing, and selecting new equipment is a key element to staying cutting edge.
Develop trust: the tools you build and the coding practices you use set the tone for what we can do. We are building for consistent results and tools that allow us transparency into our scientific processes.
- Experience repairing complex electromechanical lab equipment
- Experience programming in Python (preferred) or C#
- Prior work with liquid handlers, automated imaging systems, and microplate dispensers
- Experience with capturing logging data (ie, using Splunk) preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field
Who You’ll Join
Our 14-person team has backgrounds in bioengineering, drug discovery, tech, and clinical affairs. We’re avid runners, hikers, hobbyists, human (and dog) parents, and big fans of the Mountain West.
We’re building out a fully automated pipeline in our Salt Lake City, UT lab and have research collaborations with several top cancer centers to receive and process patient samples. We offer health insurance, snacks and drinks in the office, lunch provided 3x weekly, and flexible vacation/sick leave.
Why you should join Known Medicine
Known Medicine is helping oncologists pick the best treatment for cancer patients, faster. Using a patient’s own tumor sample, we are able to give oncologists insight into how their cells will respond to different treatments. We combine cutting edge high throughput biology with AI to solve the hardest problems in cancer treatment. Our founders are a biomedical engineer and an AI for drug discovery data scientist
