Lead Software Engineer

Job Summary

As a Lead Software Engineer, you will take charge of creating innovative software solutions and lead teams of developers implementing and improving applications for Kobo360, Experiences, and Products globally. As a Tech Lead, you will be responsible for helping estimate, plan, and oversee development activities being executed by both internal and vendor development resources. The Agile delivery methodology will be the predominate working model for your team. The Tech Lead role will be regularly expected to lead meetings, interface laterally with senior technology and line of business stakeholders, and assume the main responsibility for the technical solution and steering of the technical work of developers / engineers working on assigned projects.

Duties/Responsibilities of a Lead Software Engineer

• Provide planning, processing and performing all jobs
• Design and develop programming systems
• Respond promptly and professionally to bug reports
• Review and repair legacy code
• Conduct system analysis and development with limited support from professional staff
• Analyze, design, coordinate and supervise the development of software systems
• Analyze system specifications and translate system requirements to task specifications for junior programmers
• Provide analysis of current programs which includes performance, diagnosis and troubleshooting of problem
• Program, and designing solutions to problematic programming
• Develop new programs and prove the program to develop needed changes
• Develop new programs, analyze current programs and processes, and make recommendations
• Write, edit, and debug new computer programs for assigned projects
• Document code consistently throughout the development process by listing a description of the program, special instructions, and any changes made in database tables on procedural, modular and database level responsible for reading, understanding, and utilizing all part and assembly prints, forms, spreadsheets, bills of material, specification sheets, and technical references
• Utilize tools and equipment involved in performance of essential functions of programming including measuring instruments
• Search, summarize and keep the team abreast of strategic information from all sources
• Maintains client databases
• Communicate with engineers and manufacturer’s technical support staff regarding programming needs and performance
• Provides feedback to analysis/training staff about performance considerations / usability issues concerning software specifications and implementation
• Research and recommend software tools to management
• Provide assistance to testers and supports personnel as needed to determine system problems

Basic Qualifications

A minimum of eight (5) years of software development experience Experience collecting, reviewing and updating requirements and/or user stories Experience writing technical documentation and providing engineering deliverables Experience with SCRUM and other Agile development practices a plus A demonstrated pattern of leadership, formal or otherwise

Technical Skills Required:

Preferred Qualifications: Has solid understanding of the software development life cycle SDLC (e.g. requirements, analysis, design, implementation, testing, and documentation) and associated execution models (e.g. Waterfall, Agile, Iterative Development, etc.) Disciplined approach to software development. Including defining and enforcing engineering best practices Expertise in modern web frameworks (Angular, React, Polymer) Strength in full-stack web development (Java/J2EE, PHP, Node) Strength in web performance (First Contentful Paint, First Meaningful Paint, Image Optimization, JS and CSS optimization) Strong problem solving and analysis skills. Expert level knowledge in Object Oriented Programming Strong understanding of Computer Science fundamentals Strong knowledge of unit testing, behavioral testing and continuous integration Strong application performance / tuning skills Demonstrated understanding of the importance of maintainable / sustainable product solutions General knowledge developing mobile applications that interface with RESTful services

SOFT SKILLS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. The position requires frequent communication with senior leaders, technical colleagues and partners across several different geographic locations and time zones Proven ability to work with all members of an extended and diverse project team Must be detail-oriented, self-organized, be committed to quality and be capable of tracking multiple issues simultaneously Candidate must have mentoring and guidance skills to provide oversight and direction to contractors and internal members of the software development team Ability to handle virtual teams and work with resources in multiple sites (onsite, offshore, near shore) Excellent time management skills
