The Role As the Head of Software Engineering, you will lead the team that helps design and build our low latency, event streaming, US public equities trading platform. This is a highly-regulated and highly-visible environment, where correctness and system performance are paramount. This is a hands-on role, and you’ll be providing expertise, leadership, and driving strategy across core areas like distributed software systems design, and low-latency performance engineering. You will recruit, hire, coach, and retain outstanding talent.

In addition to driving the continuous improvement of the existing codebase, you will also partner with the VP of Engineering, and the Head of Product on new strategic product initiatives. You’ll regularly work with our Regulatory and Market Operations teams to keep abreast of industry initiatives, and member feedback.

You are:

  • Successful at building and leading high performing engineering teams that are responsible for building software for critical infrastructure.
  • Adept at leading positive change, empowering people, cultivating product technology visions and innovative solutions, and fostering effective and humane engineering practices and culture.
  • A systems thinker, an effective communicator, and can find the balance between when to be tactical vs. strategic.
  • Skilled at identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in the full lifecycle of a large distributed system, with prior experience in areas such as design, development, configuration, testing, deployment, monitoring and operations.
  • A champion of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment to build a culture of belonging and psychological safety.
  • Highly-collaborative, and can build strong relationships at all levels of the technology and business organizations.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • More than 12 years of relevant working experience, with technical hands-on experience having built and supported distributed-event-driven, or event stream software systems using Core Java.
  • At least 3 years experience in leading development teams, preferably in a regulated environment.
  • US Equities trading software and infrastructure experience.
  • Been an expert practitioner of modern software development, and has the ability to contribute to, and mentor others, on internal codebases.
  • Partnered successfully with Product teams to design and bring new products and features reliably to market.
  • Successfully worked in early-stage, fast-paced, high-growth environments.

Nice to haves:

  • You already embrace Lean Startup methodology, experimentation, and feedback-oriented development.
  • You have capital markets experience, preferably in the US Equities Market space.
  • You have built and or operated low-latency, high-throughput systems (trading, ad tech, edge networking).
  • You have a deep understanding of performance engineering as it pertains to both bare metal, and cloud infrastructure.

Benefits include:

  • People. Work in a mission-based company with skilled, committed, and supportive teammates who share your desire to create a new kind of public market, and have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent medical, dental and vision benefits.
  • A commitment to a sustainable work environment, including an unlimited vacation policy that requires team members to take a minimum of three weeks vacation per year.
  • 401k.
  • Computer and home office setup.
  • Competitive and flexible early startup compensation package range: $208,700 - $240,000 + equity, based on experience.
