About the role

About Us

Manara is a social impact startup whose mission is to unlock human potential and diversify the global tech sector while uplifting the economies of the Middle East & North Africa (MENA), with a focus on Palestine and women. The region has the highest youth unemployment in the world (higher than subSaharan Africa) despite high levels of tertiary education. Women are particularly impacted: in Palestine, 52% of computer science students are women, but 83% of them end up unemployed.

We run an entirely remote solution to identify the top computer scientists in the region, teach them how to pass interviews, vet them, and help them find amazing jobs (whether remote or on-site). It works: at Google 71% of our referrals in our last batch were hired. But we don’t stop at job placement. Our vision is to build the top tech talent community in the MENA region and support them at each stage in their lifecycle to help them reach their dreams.

You may have heard about us previously: Dalia's story went viral on Hacker News in March (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26251143) and Samah's went viral on LinkedIn in September (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6838879791165263872/)

Our team previously worked at Google, Upwork, Nvidia, and Gaza Sky Geeks. Our investors include Stripe, Y Combinator, Seedcamp, Reid Hoffman, Paul Graham, and Jessica Livingston. We operate entirely remotely with hubs in Berlin, Palestine, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

About the Role

We are looking for a Director or Head of Marketing who has experience building and executing a brand marketing strategy. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining all our marketing channels, with a strong focus on storytelling and events.

For this role, you will focus on two main user groups: increasing the number of hiring partners (in Europe, the US and the Middle East) and growing our talent community in the Middle East and North Africa (with a focus on women engineers).

Some attributes we are looking for:

  • Resourceful Leadership: we want someone who is ready to take the lead, make decisions and find solutions. You should be ready to manage and motivate a team of freelancers.
  • Brand-focused Storyteller: From social media, to events, to PR, storytelling is the backbone of Manara’s brand and good writing and communication skills are essential to excel in this role. Multi-channel Marketeer: While storytelling is your backbone, we would love someone who isn’t afraid to jump into paid marketing, partnerships and other types of marketing to amplify our brand.
  • Growth-minded: We are a social impact startup, not an NGO. We need you to operate like a top startup leader, while maintaining 100% commitment to our social impact.
  • Team player: We are a small but mighty team and need someone who brings the same “leave your ego at the door” attitude. You roll up your sleeves to do the unglamorous work or support a team member when needed.

Some top-notch skills to have (but please don’t rule yourself out if you don’t have them!)

  • Fluent English: stories & social media must be published in English Experience with marketing and design tools like: Figma or Sketch, SendGrid, Salesforce, Zoom Webinar, and others.
  • Fluent in social media marketing across Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • PR networks in Europe or the Middle East & North Africa

Knock our socks off:

  • Fluent Arabic or French: if you don’t speak these, you’ll manage other resources to publish stories & social media in these languages too
  • Passionate about social entrepreneurship: with a special interest in women’s careers & potential, and Palestine and the broader MENA region
  • Talent industry expertise: you have prior exposure to & expertise in the talent industry, particularly engineering

Application Process

Please share one idea to attract more talent from MENA to Manara, or one idea to attract more hiring partners in Europe to hire this talent.
