About the role

What we need is someone exceptional to own the product engineering discipline. You might identify as a “product engineer” if:

  • The designer/engineer distinction is blurry for you. You only know how to create product that looks and feels good to the user.
  • You have strong aesthetic sense. When you use apps, you can tell when fonts or spacing is inconsistent (and may even be offended by it). Better yet, you make systems that make such inconsistencies impossible to show up in production.
  • You’re not too wedded to any particular technology or stack. You just think in terms of the best possible experience and work backwards from there.
  • You were already a great engineer before LLMs could code. You also figured out how to use AI-assisted coding to be even more effective.

Our product is unique because some surfaces will be used by our business customers, while others will be consumer-facing. We’re building what will become a household name for many, but will be paid for by relatively few (analogous to Visa).

We have world-class investors in our corner, like Semil Shah, Amjad Masad, Alana Goyal, Jaren Glover, Sabrina Hahn, and Y Combinator.

What you can expect from us:

  • Meaningful equity ownership. Our founder knows this viscerally as a prior “first 10” employee himself.
  • The best “preparation” for founding a company of your own. You’ll work closely with Andy Qin, who stays deep in the details.

About OpenTools

OpenTools is building a tool use authorization network between AI applications and the human users they serve. It's akin to how Visa is a payment authorization network between acquiring banks and cardholders.

An example: "Perplexity wants write access to your ‘to-do list’ Notion document — does it have your permission?" We’re seeing that AI application developers and end users alike prefer a secure and familiar permissioning experience.

We’re founded by Andy Qin, who brings firsthand experience with the payment authorization networks as an early Stripe and Modern Treasury employee. We’re also well-capitalized by world-class investors and have name-brand early customers.
