About the role

The Role:

Pachama is looking for a Forest Biometrician to join our team to help develop new forest carbon projects. In this role, you would be responsible, alongside our Project Implementation team, to ensure the success of new carbon projects and their credit accounting. You would use Pachama models and collect new data where needed to quantify carbon benefits and perform other analyses  necessary for creating, registering, and verifying a carbon project. You also will help to evaluate potential new projects or expansion opportunities for Pachama to identify high potential new partners.

You would be excited about this role if you love the idea of working cross-functionally to make conservation and restoration projects happen. You love to problem solve and are interested in using data to help to create carbon projects that deliver meaningful climate benefits. You have experience with forest carbon projects and understand how forest carbon methodologies work, possibly even having participated in creating a past project or verifying carbon projects.

This role is remote with a preference for being within 3 hours of Pacific time. This role will require occasional travel internationally for project-specific work.

Who We Are:

Pachama is a mission-driven company looking to restore nature to help address climate change. Pachama brings the latest technology in remote sensing and AI to the world of forest carbon in order to enable forest conservation and restoration to scale. Pachama’s core technology harnesses satellite imaging with artificial intelligence to measure carbon captured in forests. Through the Pachama marketplace, responsible companies and individuals can connect with carbon credits from projects that are protecting and restoring forests worldwide.

What You Will Help Us With:

  • Conduct a range of analyses necessary at each phase of carbon project development, including accurately quantifying true carbon benefits using  Pachama’s technology and methods
  • Contribute to development of new techniques and tools to improve efficiencies
  • Contribute to the development of PDDs, and prepare other written reports of findings for Pachama and its stakeholders.
  • Design and process field plot inventories and satellite data analyses
  • Develop and/or employ tree growth models for eco-regions across North and South America
  • Analyze site suitability for restoration efforts

Experience & Skills We're Looking For:

  • Knowledge of carbon project methodologies in Verra, ACR, or CAR
  • 2-5 years experience in forest carbon project development or auditing
  • Experience with forest plot data collection and statistically rigorous sampling design
  • Experience with tree growth models and allometric equations
  • Experience with GEE, QGIS, ArcGIS, or other spatial analysis tools

Even if you don’t meet all these requirements, we encourage you to apply if this job description excites you. We are looking for ambitious people to help make an impact on climate change. That purpose requires us to bring together a diverse set of people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and skills to create solutions that work for all.

Why you should join Pachama

Pachama's mission is to restore nature to solve climate change. We are using technologies such as machine learning applied to satellite data to measure and monitor carbon sequestration and deforestation risk on forests worldwide. We then use this data to help originate, certify and commercialize carbon credits to fund reforestation and conservation projects that sequester carbon, enhance biodiversity and support local communities.
