About the role

About Paperspace

Paperspace is a cloud computing company creating simple and scalable accelerated computing applications. Our goal is to allow individuals and professional teams to build applications with ease -  from Machine Learning to 3D graphics.

Paperspace is backed by leading investors including Y Combinator, Initialized Capital, Battery Ventures, and Intel Capital.

Our Team

Paperspace values technical excellence in an open and inclusive environment. The team is primarily based in NYC, but we have a strong remote/hybrid team. Communication is paramount and mutual respect is at the core of our collaborative work environment. We are also committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We believe creating a more diverse team directly impacts our ability to collaborate effectively, build a better community, and produce better products.

About the role

The Cloud Platform team is responsible for the infrastructure and services that make up Paperspace’s cloud. The team manages our hardware infrastructure, internal networks, and user-facing products such as shared file system service, object store, managed Kubernetes, VPCs, and compute. The team’s goal is to provide a reliable and scalable platform so that both users and Paperspace can run their applications easily and reliably.

As a Staff Engineer, you’ll contribute your technical leadership and expertise to release and maintain high-quality products at Paperspace. In collaboration with fellow engineers, product managers, and designers, you’ll be working on hard problems that will greatly impact the business. In addition, you will work to maintain and shape engineering standards through mentorship, cross-team collaboration, and leading by example.

What we're looking for

• 8+ years relevant industry experience in a fast-paced, high growth tech environment building and scaling infrastructure using engineering practices with languages such as Python or Go

• Fluency in working with config management tools (Ansible, Salt, Puppet, Chef) and infrastructure management tools (Terraform or Pulumi) to support immutable infrastructure

• Experience with metric-driven monitoring and alerting using Prometheus or another monitoring system

• Experience with networking and large-scaled storage architectures

• Familiarity with Kubernetes automation, monitoring, stability, and security including tools like helm and customize

• Experience shipping high-quality products from planning to launch to maintenance

• Proven experience collaborating across teams ranging from platform and infrastructure to product and marketing

• Ability to make trade-offs effectively in regards to both engineering and product requirements, while also effectively balancing short term and long term needs

What you'll be doing

• Be a leader in the areas of reliability, scalability, developer experience, and system observability on the Cloud Platform team

• Architect and consult on infrastructure needs to move products forward with a focus on reliability, scalability, and observability

• Automate all parts of our internal and user-facing infrastructure and systems to minimize manual intervention and to create clear, sustainable team run processes

• Work with fellow engineers to find ways to address their infrastructure needs and provide self-service tools to empower them

• Manage and improve our Ceph based storage system across multiple regions

• Automating and maintain our software-defined network products and ensure reliability

• Facilitate a sustainable code delivery process using tests, code reviews, and best practices

• Build relationships with engineers and mentor on productivity and best practices from a technical perspective

• Working with other teams to find a well-balanced implementation for products

What to expect

In your first month, you will be hitting the ground running as you join the Engineering Team. You’ll be learning about our engineering workflows, technical architecture, and current product/business initiatives. In parallel, you’ll be making small to moderate code changes, engaging in the code review process, and developing relationships with your immediate team and other teams. As you develop a mental model of the product, technical architecture, and business, you will start to steward engineering initiatives that can positively impact the product and across the organization.

In subsequent months, you will be an active technical leader committing large features to the code base, managing releases, and driving the product and business forward in your area. You will also be facilitating the sustainable delivery of high-quality code with your team and are actively working on initiatives to help elevate the engineering organization as a whole.

Who you’ll be working with

Philip Reichenberger - VP of Engineering

Philip is responsible for the health of the engineering organization at Paperspace. He works to ensure a healthy balance of velocity and quality while empowering teams to be full owners of the products they build. Before Paperspace, he led Web Operations at Shutterstock to a successful IPO, led engineering at Server Stack (now Digital Ocean), and founded a few startups in ad tech, e-commerce, hospitality, and wireless technologies. While not at work, he is on the water rower, playing guitar, or playing board games.
