Unlocking carbon markets for European forest owners
We enable forest owners to access carbon markets the easy way. We build software that automatically assesses forests through remote sensing data and simulates its future development to allow us to quantify carbon stock changes over time. Forest owners can store additional carbon in their forest by adopting sustainable forest management practices. Each additional ton of carbon stored generates a "carbon credit". By investing in forest carbon projects, companies can actively contribute to climate protection. Through the sale of carbon credits, forest owners benefit from a recurring income that is reinvested in sustainable forest management.

We love to keep things simple, straight forward and reusable, to deliver the most impact with the least effort. Our services' backend runs on Typescript, Next.js and Postgres (with Prisma as an ORM) in a serverless environment. Our frontend is therefore built with React, Bootstrap, and Sass Built with Webpack. We also use Java and Python for our data science work. Everything is running on Azure and we use Github for code management and as a CI/CD platform.
As a Software Engineering (Full Stack) Intern, you build our certification and quantification platform for forest owners. This includes a variety of tasks, such as feature discovery and implementation, system design, infrastructure planning, and development operations. Your ultimate goal is to enable forest owners to start and develop their carbon credit projects via Pina's platform - which is the heart of Pina's service.

European forests are dying due to the consequences of climate change, namely droughts, storms, and beetle infestations. Thus, not only the forest carbon storage decreases, but also the habitat for many animals and plants. A potential way of fighting forest degradation is to adopt more sustainable forest management practices, i.e. planting climate-resilient mixed forests instead of monocultures. However, this can be very costly for forest owners.
Pina's mission is to protect our forests by quantifying and rewarding sustainable forestry.
Pina Earth is building a suite of digital tools for data collection, monitoring, and certification of forest carbon projects. With Pina Earth, forest owners can start high-quality carbon projects on their properties and use the new income stream to prepare their forests for a changing climate. Founded only last year, the startup already has active pilot projects on over 1,000 hectare (∼2,500 acres) in Germany. The founders met at CDTM and joined their expertise in sustainability science, software engineering, and machine learning to help EU forests.
