About the role

🌳 What we do

We enable forest owners to access carbon markets the easy way. We build software that automatically assesses forests through remote sensing data and simulates its future development to allow us to quantify carbon stock changes over time. Forest owners can store additional carbon in their forest by adopting sustainable forest management practices. Each additional ton of carbon stored generates a "carbon credit". By investing in forest carbon projects, companies can actively contribute to climate protection. Through the sale of carbon credits, forest owners benefit from a recurring income that is reinvested in sustainable forest management.

Read more about the challenges of the carbon market and what we’re doing to address them in our recent TechCrunch article.

πŸ€– Our stack

We love to keep things simple, straight forward and reusable, to deliver the most impact with the least effort. Our services' backend runs on Typescript, Next.js and Postgres (with Prisma as an ORM) in a serverless environment. Our frontend is therefore built with React, Bootstrap, and Sass Built with Webpack. We also use Java and Python for our data science work. Everything is running on Azure and we use Github for code management and as a CI/CD platform.

😲 About the opportunity

As a Software Engineering (Full Stack) Intern, you build our certification and quantification platform for forest owners. This includes a variety of tasks, such as feature discovery and implementation, system design, infrastructure planning, and development operations. Your ultimate goal is to enable forest owners to start and develop their carbon credit projects via Pina's platform - which is the heart of Pina's service.

😎 What you will work on

  • Understand user needs: You are part of the feature discovery process together with us and our forest owners. You learn about their needs/problems and come up with solutions.
  • Develop features: After learning what we need to build, you are involved in the actual implementation of the features from front to back. This includes work on our domain model, Typescript and React driven frontend, and our Next.js backend (with Prsima and Postgres).
  • Build and run the code: You are responsible to test, deploy, and monitor your own code. This involves work for example with our infrastructure, CI/CD pipeline, and testing suites.
  • Shape our team work: You are part of a fast ~~~~moving and teamwork ~~~~focused bunch of smart people, that live and breath the agile mindset. By actively attending all relevant team meetings (e.g. Grooming, Planning, Retro), you can directly influence how we work and flourish as a team.

πŸ’š Benefits of being a part of Pina Earth

  • As one of the earliest hires, you have a central impact on our startup and many development possibilities
  • Join our team events: dinners, parties, bouldering sessions, you name it!
  • Work at our office in the heart of Munich (@Stachus)
  • and finally: the best coffee of course β˜•οΈ

About the interview

Are you excited about Pina? Here is how you can join our journey. We aim for a fast recruiting process, with the goal to accomplish all steps within two weeks.

Step 1: Written Application

βœ‰ Tell us about yourself

Drop us some lines along with the documents mentioned in each job description. We are very curious to read about you.

Step 2: First (Video) Call

πŸ’¬ Meet Pina

It's time to get to know each other! You will have a first short call with a Pina team member. You can ask all your open questions. And we would like to understand your motivation, expectations, and working style better.

Step 3: Interview day*

*We will do our best to schedule the following three parts into 1 day to allow for a quick process and decision.

✏ Work on a small task

Solve a small task related to the job position at home or (if possible) at our office. This does not take longer than 3 hours. The task provides you a first glimpse of Pina's current agenda. And we get a better idea of your skillset. Important: It is not about a 100% perfect solution, but rather about how you approach a given problem.

πŸ’¬ Meet your go-to co-founder

Meet your go-to co-founder, with whom you will be closely working at Pina. You will present and discuss your task and get the chance to ask any open questions.

πŸ’¬ Meet the other co-founders

Now it is time to meet the other two co-founders. In this interview, we would like to better understand the experiences you gained in past projects and jobs as well as your motivation to join Pina.

Step 4: Offer & Onboarding

πŸ’š Join the Pina Team!

If you and we think it's a fit - let's get started! In a last step we will discuss your contract details and everything about your first days at Pina.

P.S.: You're wondering why there isn't a list of requirements in the job description? We believe that it is more important that you are excited about the described job role and want to learn more, than simply fulfilling a list of high-level requirements. We want to hear your story!

Why you should join Pina Earth

🌍 Why we act

European forests are dying due to the consequences of climate change, namely droughts, storms, and beetle infestations. Thus, not only the forest carbon storage decreases, but also the habitat for many animals and plants. A potential way of fighting forest degradation is to adopt more sustainable forest management practices, i.e. planting climate-resilient mixed forests instead of monocultures. However, this can be very costly for forest owners.

πŸš€ Our mission

Pina's mission is to protect our forests by quantifying and rewarding sustainable forestry.

🌳 What we're building

Pina Earth is building a suite of digital tools for data collection, monitoring, and certification of forest carbon projects. With Pina Earth, forest owners can start high-quality carbon projects on their properties and use the new income stream to prepare their forests for a changing climate. Founded only last year, the startup already has active pilot projects on over 1,000 hectare (∼2,500 acres) in Germany. The founders met at CDTM and joined their expertise in sustainability science, software engineering, and machine learning to help EU forests.
