About the Role

This is a crucial role at Pocket Worlds that touches all parts of our company, though the specific focus initially will be focused on product and marketing. As the first dedicated data science role in our company, you'll work closely with the executive team to establish and proactively push our data strategy. Our current priorities, in order of both importance and complexity, are...

  1. Forecasting. In order to grow efficiently, we are looking to establish and improve forecasting models for player life-time value, retention, and other metrics from a variety of behavioral and demographic inputs.

  2. Segmentation & Analysis. Use behavioral and demographic data to segment our audience. Then leverage those segments to understand how new features and content impacts those segments.

  3. Recommendation Systems. Design and implement recommendation systems for a variety of in-game features. These include friend, room and news feed recommendations.

You will...

  • Be the first hire on our data science and analytics team.
  • Work closely with the CEO to establish a data strategy for our flagship product Highrise, and future products.
  • Work closely with marketing and product leads to establish a forecasting strategy for predicting retention, lifetime value, and other important KPIs. In the process, you'll also determine what features, behaviors, and player properties drive these KPIs.
  • Work closely with product leads to develop an understanding of our audience and how our audience behaves. By doing so, you'll create customer segments for better analysis and targeting.
  • Work with tools like Amplitude, Periscope, Redshift and others to analyze data.
  • Implement some data pipelines and data engineering workflows. You don't need to be a best-in-class data engineer, but some experience and willingness to learn is required.
  • Along with doing the work yourself, you will also guide the engineering team to build data infrastructure based on what you'd need to accomplish your goals.
  • Establish and test hypotheses in a rigorous, scientific way.

You have...

  • A degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or any related field.
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience in data analytics or data science.
  • Experience with SQL, R and Python.
  • Experience building and tuning predictive models.
  • Experience running and analyzing A/B and multivariate tests.
  • Experience analyzing and exploring data to identify patterns.
  • Experience building basic data engineering pipelines.
  • Drafted basic specifications for data infrastructure needs that can be deployed by engineers.
  • An immense amount of ownership and motivation over your projects.
  • Bonus points for experience with Amplitude, Periscope or AWS data infrastructure.

Within 3 months you will...

  • Survey the current data infrastructure at Pocket Worlds and identify any issues and opportunities.
  • Establish a baseline forecast for lifetime value and retention using the data available.
  • Build some rudimentary data pipelines primarily focused on forecasting and marketing.
  • Draft a roadmap for answering data-driven questions and stack rank them by priority.
  • Answer the data-driven questions.

Within 6 months you will...

  • Identify which areas require more people or resources and work with the CEO to bring those resources to the team.
  • Continuously improve our forecasting models.
  • Analyze user behavior in-app to understand user segments, impact analyses, and other components that can help the product team evolve the product.
  • Work with the product team to increase user lifetime value by understanding user journeys in the app.
  • Begin designing recommendation systems for various features in the app.
  • Begin working on additional data pipelines that are required for productionizing various models.

Benefits

  • Home office stipend. Haven't worked remotely before? We offer a generous stipend to help you set up a productive workspace.

  • Competitive salaries and significant equity.

  • Unlimited Vacation policy. Time off is important - we encourage you to take the time you need.

  • Education stipend. We deeply believe in learning and self improvement. We've set aside a budget for every employee to learn additional skills and grow.
