Director of Engineering
About the role
PolicyFly empowers insurers to sell and manage specialty insurance in minutes instead of months. Every year, $200B of specialty insurance like Cyber, Flood, or Trucking is processed over email between agents and insurers. It’s a slow, inefficient world where 55% of agents' time is spent on paperwork and it can take 30-90 days to get coverage.
Our mission is to create a modern exchange for hard-to-insure things – connecting all parties to automate workflows and consolidate data. We are modernizing specialty insurance with software. We’re already managing $70M in premium with leading insurers in both the US and UK markets.
We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our high performing team of 7 (and growing) engineers. You'll help build our engineering culture & team, guide product development and define team processes. You'll also collaborate with the founders to iterate and prioritize features and initiatives that continue to make PolicyFly a mission critical platform for our users.
Our stack: Python, Go, Kubernetes, VueJS, Protobuf, Postgres and Google Cloud.
What you’ll be doing:
- Manage and scale a world class distributed engineering team by hiring, leading and retaining exceptional people
- Collaborate in roadmap planning and product strategy
- Lead the engineering team to deliver on our goals and roadmap
- Locate bottlenecks in our processes and work to streamline them
You have:
- 4+ years of experience managing and leading teams
- 4+ years of experience as an Senior or Staff Eng
- Led and scaled multiple engineering teams
- The ability to run a scrum cycle with your eyes closed
- Experience working with Product (our CEO) to provide feedback, iteration on plans and feasibility checks
- Experience with our tech stack
Generally, you are:
- Comfortable working remotely, overlapping ET by ~5-6 hours a day
- A commutable distance to NYC for occasional meetings (a plus; not required)
