Mechanical Engineer (Titan Fuel Forge Development) The Titan Fuel Forge is Prometheus’ revolutionary fuel-production system. It works on the concept of reverse combustion, capturing CO2 and water from the air, powering them with electricity from renewable energy to make hydrocarbons, and using a unique carbon nanotube membrane to produce zero net carbon fuels. As a member of the Titan Fuel Forge design team you will develop the first commercial-scale Forges to decarbonize transportation across the aviation, maritime, and automotive sectors. You will focus on the design of the next generation Faraday Reactor, where CO2 and water are combined with power in the Titan Fuel Forge. This will require optimization of liquid and gas flows for low pressure drop and effective mixing; materials selection; designing to enable automated assembly; maximizing reliability and minimizing cost.
Responsibilities ● Apply mechanical engineering fundamentals and design software to create robust designs for fabrication of 2D and 3D components – fabrication methodologies include waterjet or laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC machining, injection molding, welding, and manual or automated assembly ● Make improvements iteratively through a design, fabricate, and test cycle ● Build and contribute to models of capital and operating costs of systems and components ● Employ excellent communication skills across teams ● Manage cost and schedule for assigned projects ● Willing to work across a broad range of activities to support team goals – growth-stage startups require a wide range of skills ● Ability to work independently or in a team ● Contribute to a positive culture of collaborative experimentation and innovation
Requirements ● Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering with 3-10 years mechanical engineering experience ● Proficient in CAD using at least one major design package – we haven’t standardized on this yet and will value your opinion on which you think is best ● Skilled in computational fluid dynamics – examples include manifold design, mixed gas and liquid flows, turbulence, pressure drop, mixing, boundary layer thickness, and optimization of these ● Mastery of 2D and 3D modeling ● Experienced with materials selection including metals, polymers, and composites ● Expertise in manufacturing processes including 3D printing, 2D cutting, machining, welding, and injection molding ● Adept at prioritizing tasks and executing multiple assignments concurrently in a rapidly changing environment that requires mental flexibility, creativity, discipline, and resilience ● Experience leading a technical team a strong plus
Location of position is our 20,000 square foot prototyping and manufacturing facility in Santa Cruz, CA, less than one mile from the beach, in a walkable neighborhood with coffee shops, natural groceries, yoga studios, etc. – you don’t have to surf, hike, camp, or like perfect weather, but our location is a plus if you do. Must be on-site, but work from home for appropriate tasks is available.
