About the role

🌟 Who We're Looking For

We're seeking a strategic and creative writer-editor-marketer to lead Pulley’s end-to-end content strategy. Our goal is to further establish Pulley as a trusted brand for entrepreneurs on the topics of company building and ownership.

We believe in developing original, best-in-class content that engages and educates founders and their teams. We get excited by a blend of storytelling and tactical advice that is well researched, opinionated, and actionable. Your work will support the entire marketing funnel, from awareness to consideration and purchase.

We’re looking for someone who takes a holistic and customer-focused approach to content. The ideal candidate majors in content strategy and development, but minors in brand and community building. They believe that content is not limited to blog posts.

Over 30% of Pulley’s team is former founders, and we're on a mission to help entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life. If you’re excited by our mission, we’d love to hear from you. The role will be part of our Marketing team and report to our GTM leader.

đź›  Responsibilities

Drive the content marketing strategy for Pulley, with an initial focus on creating content for founder audiences. Note: content is not limited to blog posts

Own awareness, engagement, and acquisition metrics driven by content, including socials. Manage Pulley’s content pipeline across all funnel segments to achieve our growth objectives

Develop and refine Pulley’s points of view on company building and ownership

Distribute content in multiple formats and mediums, including white papers, video, social, and other formats (whatever you think will get us to our goals)

Collaborate with teammates across product marketing, growth, channel partnerships, and leadership to create customer-centric content

Ensure a high quality bar for all content produced by Pulley

🙌 Qualifications & Fit

Experience with high-growth B2B SaaS businesses. Bonus points if you have experience writing for founder audiences

Have grown a column, blog, or publication to 6-figure traffic each month and maintained a content machine, including social channels, that drove business outcomes

Outstanding writing ability that’s clear, concise, and structured

Familiarity with playbooks for other formats (e.g., video, social)

Ability to manage multiple priorities, stakeholders, and requests across the team, including contractors on an ad hoc basis

đź“ť Application process Submit your resume and writing portfolio with your application, and our team will reach out with next steps.

Looking forward to getting to know you!

✨ Our Culture

TL&DR - Pulley is not a good fit for everyone, and that’s OK. This is a bit about the culture of Pulley. We need people who aren’t just interested in working at a startup; we need people who are excited about building a great company. In addition to function-specific skills, here are some traits that enable our team members to thrive:

First Principles Thinking -- We believe in breaking down problems into their most basic parts. We don’t reject ideas because they haven’t worked before. We understand “why did certain things work?” and apply it to our situation.

Ship It & Iterate -- Shipping is the starting line for learning. Ship something, talk to users, get feedback, and iterate. We focus on the inputs - on what we can control - not the outcomes. We take our best bets, and don’t fixate on the finish line.

Boldly Honest & Aggressively Considerate -- Being boldly honest means we push one another to act from first principles, set and hit goals, and ruthlessly prioritize. Being aggressively considerate means we care about each other as humans to win as a team. We speak up and embrace feedback.

Default Yes -- We believe that something is possible unless proven otherwise. Hard problems are often solved by people who didn’t know it was impossible.

We’re also inspired by the culture work done at other companies and plan to develop our own playbook here too. One of the concepts that resonate most with us is the importance of stunning colleagues.

If you like the sound of our environment and you’re passionate about joining a team like the one we’ve described, we'd love to talk!

About the interview

1. Background Screen (30 min)

  • Introductions (5 min)
  • Relevant Experience and Questions (20 min)
  • Questions from you (5 min)
  • Format: You will be meeting (call or zoom) with Nimesh Perera or someone on the team to understand what motivates you in a new role, dig deeper into your experience, understand how you spend your time, how you elevate content marketing and keep a high bar, and your overall writing voice. At the end of this session, Nimesh will gather writing samples and/or a writing portfolio from you.

2. Hiring Manager Screen (40 min):

Format: You will be meeting (call or zoom) with our hiring manager. This conversation will dig a little deeper into some or all of the following:

  • Your background
  • Your work/writing samples
  • Understanding how you work across different mediums and channels
  • Assess visuals and written competencies

What you should expect:

  • Ideally, work samples or past work should give us a good understanding of who you are as a content marketer and the tone and voice you can bring to a company/product.
  • We should have a clear idea of who you were working and collaborating with and what your role was on the team/project.
  • Be sure to touch on the goals of the project, timeline and scope, if the project accomplished the goals, and any metrics of success.

3. Prompt / Writing Ideation (~1-3 hrs)

Format: You will be given a take-home assignment to complete on your own time. This will later be presented to the team. There is no hard deadline on completion, but ideally within 1-2 weeks.

What you should expect: ‣

The goal of this prompt is to ensure fit and readiness for the role. The assignment will reflect the strategic AND executional aspects of the role. We also want to make sure you’re excited by this kind of work.

Since your work will span the entire marketing funnel, we ask that you complete two of the three tasks in the document. If we like your work, we’d love to use it — in which case, we will of course compensate you accordingly.

Submit your assignment via Google Docs. Include external links as needed.

4. Prompt Walkthrough with Team (45 min)

Format: You will be meeting with our hiring manager, Laura Peng, and potentially a few others in the team to present your submission. Expect this to be a combination of a 15-20 min walkthrough and a Q&A session as opposed to a full 45 min presentation.

What you should expect:

Everyone will have reviewed the submission before joining. We ask that you come ready to share your screen and to walk us through your thinking. We will focus the discussion on (a) why you chose the specific prompts you picked and (b) your process for ideation and development.

In the second half of the conversation, come prepared to talk about how you like to work cross-functionally. In this role, you will be expected to work autonomously with others, provide context on input requests (if any), and ensure others are aligned with your goals and timelines.
