About the role

What we do

Today, on the outside, Riya Collective looks like a marketplace selling goods from around the world. Under the hood, we are on a mission to build the first social-shopping experience and want to build out data-driven systems and embedded social features from the ground up to make this happen. We started as a rental business for South Asian weddings and uncovered a strong desire for people of minority descent to share and discover new styles of fashion that’s rooted in ethnic culture. What we've done since YC has uniquely positioned us to learn within the South Asian community to create and build for this future model of shopping. Since our soft launch late October, we’ve done 30k in GMV with zero marketing spend and have organically grown our community. South Asian Americans are caught between two worlds, unable to express themselves authentically, and when they shop their only option is to fly around the world to India. Gen Z and Millenials in particular are tired and we’ve shown that if we can surface the brands that only exist in india,to them, that they’ll keep coming back for more. Want to learn more about social-shopping and we are headed? Check out this article that describes Pinduoduo and how social e-commerce already works in east Asia.

Who we are We are Sarina and Arian and we’ve been friends since undergrad at MIT. Prior to starting this business we built our careers on starting, building and scaling teams and organizations across growth and marketing, operations and product in consumer marketplace businesses. We are obsessed with solving the customer needs and are working closely in order to make this come to light. We have built a large and growing community of customers itching for this new shopping experience. What we're looking for We are looking for a founding engineer with the right mix of consumer experiences and building inherently social products to come on board and build the future of social shopping with us. You will own the product development and be positioned in a leadership role. Your responsibilities include but aren’t limited to building out the MVP and first version of the mobile app, and everything from analytics and driving all technical aspects of the business. This will help us deeply understand customer needs and behaviors and collaborate on understanding opportunities. What gets us excited: You share our passion and vision of the world that consists of shopping being more social, inclusive and less wasteful. You have experience building products across the engineering stack including backend, web, and particularly mobile. You are able to make long-term technical decisions like using AWS vs GCP vs point solutions vs building core competencies. You have excellent communication skills. You have great perseverance and an iron-clad work ethic. You welcome feedback and love to learn. You get energy from working closely with a team. We are based in the Bay Area, but prioritize talent and fit over location. Would be open to discussing best arrangements. As a female-founded business we believe that our diverse perspectives are our biggest strengths — and that embracing them will create real change in the future of social shopping. You will play a key role in the culture that we create. If this resonates with you we'd love to chat! Please email founders@riyacollective.com

About the Founders: We are the team that built Riya Collective in YCW20 - A fast-growth rental business for Indian formalwear fashion and weddings. We raised a seed round after YC in March with amazing investors who share our vision. We are excited to meet you and build this future together. Sarina Siddhanti (CEO): Building for our community comes naturally to Sarina. Sarina launched our slack group and continues to be the ideator and driving the strategy on all fronts regarding community and supplier onboarding. Sarina’s experience in high-growth marketplace businesses makes her an expert in strategic development and team growth.

Prior to Riya collective, Sarina was the GM of US P&L for fintech company Funding Circle through IPO in 2018.

Arian Agrawal (Co-Founder / COO): Growth and User research. Arian comes with experience rooted in building for the customer. Her experience in scaling businesses at the earliest stage as well as building and managing product and customer-facing teams means she’s ready to do whatever means necessary in understanding the customer needs and supporting product development.

Prior to Riya Collective Arian was Head of Product at Fin and scaled Homejoy Operations across North America. YCW10
