Software Engineer (Full Stack) - Global Partnerships and Expansion
About the role
The Athletic is a subscription-based media publisher of smarter sports coverage for die-hard fans. Founded in 2016, The Athletic’s full-time writers, alongside talented contributors and freelancers, have produced thousands of in-depth articles for subscribers free of ads, pop-ups and auto-play videos. With existing coverage in 45 markets and counting across North America, The Athletic is officially expanding into the United Kingdom. Our employees are talented reporters, writers, editors, engineers, designers, marketers, brand strategists and more, who are committed to helping sports fans fall in love with the sports page again.
About the Role
You will be part of our newly-formed Global Partnerships & Expansion team. As The Athletic expands into new international markets, your team will operate as a startup within a startup, acting as a “Go to Market” team in each new country we launch in. And, as we work with major partners in our existing markets (US, Canada, and the UK) to expand our subscriber base, this team will create the infrastructure to unlock subscriber acquisition at scale.
Your team will touch many of the critical areas of our product. Your team’s charter in each new market will be unique. Depending on the needs of the market, you might be working on payments infrastructure, checkout flows, promotions, onboarding, A/B tests, or other experiences. You will have to make foundational infrastructural decisions about payments and acquisition flows to enable us to scale to ever-more partners and countries. Your work will be ever-changing and crucially important to the company as we expand domestically and internationally. And, as a full-stack engineer, you’ll get to work on every part of the stack: web, backend, API, database, analytics.
- Work with Design and Product teams to build a web UI that is beautiful, performant, and well-engineered.
- Architect and build the backend/api layer to optimize for performance, growth, scalability, ease of future development, and code quality.
- Write unit and functional tests to ensure maximum code and app quality.
- Investigate, debug, and fix user-reported production issues.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to other team members.
- Work with the team to influence technology direction.
- Brainstorm new product ideas and improvements alongside the design and product teams.
- Work within a highly cross-functional team, iterating on process and making your own suggestions for improvements.
- 2+ years experience as a full-stack software engineer
- Bachelor's degree in CS or relevant discipline
- We have 2 primary tech stacks, one in React (Next.js) with an Apollo/GraphQL API layer, and one in PHP (Wordpress) with a REST API layer. MySQL database, ElasticSearch, and DynamoDB on the backend. All hosted on AWS. Prior experience with any of the above is desired, but not required.
- Passion for sports is a bonus, passion for experimentation and data-driven decision making is a must
- The team will be largely based in London but the role can be based in a 100% remote capacity anywhere within the UK with flexibility to come to London a few times a month.
