AesculaTechLos Angeles, CA, USA
Responsive materials, better lives.
AesculaTech believes in building better lives through smart chemistry. We design custom smart materials for a range of biomedical, commercial, and industrial applications. Our platform technology, AesculaGel offers adaptive response to a wide range of stimuli and can be tailor-made for biocompatibility, material strength, and a range of other attributes.
Founded by one of MIT's 35 under 35 Innovators, AesculaTech is the shared vision of scientists, engineers, and medical experts. Our cornerstone product, Humidifeye, is an ophthalmic platform to treat dry eye disease. Dry eye affects more than 25 million Americans and the global treatment market is projected higher than $6 Billion within the next decade. Our thermally responsive, form-fitting materials are suitable for sustained yet reversible occlusion across a range of treatment times. In contrast to existing technologies, our product will not extrude, or cause discomfort as it adapts to patients. Though Humidifeye is not yet FDA approved, expect to hear about it soon!
In coordination with partners across several sectors, we have a variety of groundbreaking technologies in the works that live up to our vision. This work has already been recognized. AesculaTech was named a Rosenman Innovator, received a National Science Foundation I-Corps grant, was a finalist in the 2019 Octane High Tech Awards, and is a graduate of both the Y Combinator and TMCx accelerator programs. In short, Y-Combinator was only the beginning.

BambooLagos, Nigeria
Bamboo ― the first online brokerage service for Africans and their…
Bamboo is the first online brokerage service that gives wealthy Africans and their wealth managers direct access to the US and global securities. We’re building Fidelity for the African continent.
For wealthy Africans and their asset managers, investing in the global capital markets is cumbersome, expensive and practically inaccessible. In Nigeria, Africa's largest economy and home to 30% of all the wealth in Sub Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa), 99.99% of the investing population do not have access to invest globally. Even for the 0.01%, if you wanted to buy a US stock, you’d have to call your asset manager who would then call an international broker to execute a trade. This is inefficient & expensive!
We have a mobile app that allows individuals trade the US stock markets by themselves and a brokerage tool for asset managers to execute trades directly & manage multilple portfolios seamlessly.

Convenient made-to-measure tailoring services for Indian women
Getting clothes tailor-made is very common in India, especially for women. Saree blouses have to be tailor-made always due to their fitted nature & the non-stretchiness of typical Indian fabrics.
The tailoring market however, hasn't evolved at all. It is highly fragmented with a low NPS. The end user experience demands a significant amount of the customer's time, involving visits to a physical shop & avoidable back & forth. This is increasingly unviable for busy urban Indian women. We make it super easy by letting women place an order online, get fitted at the comfort of their homes, help them with styling their fabric & deliver the made-to-measure clothes directly to their doorstep.

BountifulSan Francisco, CA, USA
Farm, market, and buy smarter with actionable forecasting.
We’re on a mission to optimize the agricultural industry.
When we started Bountiful in 2015, the grape error rate for predicting production was 30 percent. Why? We found that many farmers in the specialty crops space were still using traditional pencil-and-paper techniques to predict yield. These low-fidelity forecasting methods weren’t giving them a clear enough understanding of their production until it was too late, leading to waste and inefficiency throughout the supply chain.
We saw a problem we wanted to solve.
Today, Bountiful is using advanced data science to help farmers forecast more accurately, so they can make better decisions. In the last three years, we’ve combined the latest in machine learning with weather, satellite, geographic, and historical data. The result is a user-friendly platform that transforms volumes of complex agricultural information into simple, actionable insights farmers can use to run more economically and environmentally sustainable farms.
More recently, we’re working to open the dialogue between buyers and sellers, remove uncertainty, and provide clarity to the supply chain to meet global food demand.
Our ultimate goal is to close the agricultural margin of error. Not only will this make individual farms more efficient, profitable, and sustainable, but it will help optimize the global food supply chain. That means healthier people and a healthier planet.

ChutneyBengaluru, Karnataka, India
Amazon for the next 300m Indians who are coming online now.
We’re building Amazon for India’s mass market, the new middle class of 300m who are now coming online. Just like Amazon started with books when the US was coming online, we are starting with fresh fruits and vegetables that Indian families buy multiple times every week.
There are over 450m Indians with access to the internet and smartphones, but only 150m of them buy online. This is because they find eCommerce apps and websites too complex to use. They also find it hard to trust an online business with no physical presence.
With Chutney, customers place their orders on Whatsapp and pick up the next day from a nearby store. All the orders are bulk shipped to the store, bringing down logistics cost.
Chutney is building a network of mom and pop stores spread across the city. Store owners share daily prices of fruits and vegetables with their customers on WhatsApp via the Chutney seller app. The app also has a simple interface for store owners to manage customer orders.
By using WhatsApp we are plugging into the existing customer behavior rather than force-fitting an app or website. Also, by partnering with mom and pop stores, we establish customer trust.
We launched 6 weeks ago in Coimbatore. We are doing over 700 orders a week amounting to $1400, growing at over 40% week on week. We are going after 60m new middle-class households, at 72 orders/year of $3 each, that is a $13b market opportunity for fresh fruits and vegetables alone.
Our vision is to build a chain of Chutney stores throughout the country, expanding across every little neighborhood and serving every need of our customers from fresh fruits and veggies to grocery and FMCG to even electronics and home appliances.

CopiaSan Francisco, CA, USA
Copia's a for-profit technology company that solves food waste &…
Every day in America, they waste 3X more food than there are mouths to feed. It is not a lack of food that's the issue, but rather an ineffective distribution of that food. Hunger is not a scarcity problem, it's a logistics problem.
For the first time ever, they can effectively donate prepared and highly perishable food to those who need it when they need it most. Copia is a for-profit company that has built technology allowing food donors (e.g., food management companies like Compass Group, corporate cafeterias, universities, hospitals, grocers, caterers etc.) to easily request pickups of their surplus food, have it matched, and safely delivered to non-profits in need. With Copia, partnering businesses can now seamlessly access significant tax savings, dramatically reduce food waste through data and analytics on surplus, and remove CO2 from the atmosphere, all while feeding the neediest in their community.
We have recovered over 3,000,000 pounds of edible food from landfills and provided businesses and nonprofits with over $15M in savings. We are currently on our way to feeding over 4 million people with great food that would have otherwise been wasted!

Because we are using virtual displays instead of sharing a local desktop screen, we can directly integrate sales assistance into the meeting flow and coach reps on the fly: Showing layovers on the sales rep’s side to guide him along the call, automatically load the right presentation content at the right time and provide real-time feedback on customer rapport.

Dost is an edtech nonprofit building a platform to expand access to early childhood development in low-resource settings through parent education. Our mission is to unlock children's full potential by focusing on early learning - the time when 90% of our brains develop.
Our work is currently in India, where 150 million women are considered illiterate and 50% of 5th graders can't read at a 2nd grade level. That's why our team at Dost Education - educators, entrepreneurs, and engineers - are passionate about using technology and user-centric product design to change the trajectory of families' lives.

DropeeKuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Dropee is a SaaS-enabled marketplace that connects brands like…
Our mission is to help local independent retailers find their best-sellers investors by matching them with the right supplier and brands.
We believe that today's evolution of the wholesale industry has stifled the growth of many SME businesses. The supply-chain in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia lacks meaningful real-time connectivity between suppliers and retailers. Hence we are determined to transform this industry by providing businesses the right tools to grow.
Our modern, digital approach to the wholesale industry allows retailers to discover, purchase, and manage inventories for their store - all on a single marketplace platform. And our software tool for suppliers helps businesses to deal with all the pain points of growing customer database, from ordering to payments.
With our data-driven approach, we connects local, independent retailers with the right brands, distributors, and wholesalers to stock their store with the best products. This saves retailers and suppliers time and money, allowing them to focus on what's most important: building and running their business.
Dropee is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The better way to run single cell genomics
Who we are?
We write software that understands the activity of individual cells as opposed to all cells. This approach is novel because we are no longer looking at average signals and can be precise. It is like a police person trying to identify the speeding car, they won’t find it if they look at all the cars at once, rather they need to look at the speed of each individual car. This is the beauty of single cell genomics, we can now identify that speeding car.
Why now?
The biggest barrier for entry into the single cell genomics market are cost and data analysis. To that end, we have reduced the cost by 10-fold and built the computational infrastructure for scalability. Although single cell sequencing has only been around for about five years, we come from one of the top single cell genomics labs and were the first to process and analyze millions of immune cells. Thanks to our software solutions, we have been able to bring big data solutions to the immune system.
Where are we and where are we going?
We have generated a database of over 1 million immune cells spanning healthy, cancerous, and autoimmune immune cells and are growing through paid partnerships. Harnessing out database and ML software, we can take a data-centric approach for better target discovery. Fortunately, as our database continues to grow, our models will continue to learn for more precise, unbiased, and automated single cell genomics.
Thank you!

The all-in-one toolkit to sell experiences online.
Our mission is to enable a generation of experience creators to do what they love.
It should be just as easy for anyone to run and grow an experience business as it is for an
e-commerce business. That’s not the way it works today.
As a generation, we perpetually crave new experiences and creators worldwide are responding to this need by starting incredible businesses based on their passions. However, their growth has been choked by using e-commerce software built for selling 'things' and so, using the wrong tools that don't work - causing frustration for creators and their customers. Easol is changing this by giving experience creators a platform to build, grow and run their businesses. Finally, a home just for experiences.
This is not -E-commerce - it's Experience Commerce.

EasyplanMumbai, Maharashtra, India
An AI-driven investment app for beginner investors in India
Easyplan is an investment app for beginner investors in India (kind of a cross between Betterment and Qapital in the US). We also provide users with a credit card secured by their investments.
We launched with money market funds and have ~40,000 customers who’ve invested (~40% MoM growth). The pandemic spurred interest among new investors, and our AUM has grown 3x since April 2020. And we’ve done this with a cost of acquisition that is 10% of the industry average.
Here’s the problem we see. Only 10% of the 100 million middle-income Indian workers have invested in the markets. This is despite the fact that they save ~30% of their income, making this a $325B potential market in assets under management.
However, current investment apps in India are built for active investors. With over 16,000+ mutual funds and 5000+ stocks to choose from, they are far too complicated for beginners, who make up most of the market.
We’re building an AI - driven investment planning software that is designed for beginners. Users use our conversational AI to get diversified mutual fund portfolios tailored to their goals. We also offer users a credit card secured by their investments, so they can earn return without losing liquidity.
In terms of business model, we make commissions on the asset we manage, and interchange fees on the fund. We estimate we can make $12 per user per year, which is 6x our current acquisition cost of $2 per investor.

Cell growth media for lab grown meat
We make the most important ingredient for lab grown meat - cell growth media. We make cell growth media 1000 times cheaper than anyone else through our novel production system.
Future Fields started out as a lab grown meat company, focusing on chicken products. We developed our first prototype using cell culture media available on the market today. With this, the price of our chicken was $3000 US per lb. Would you buy a really good chicken nugget for $300? Probably not.
We prioritized overcoming this hurdle first, and we were successful! We developed an entirely new way of producing growth factors - which are the key (and most expensive) component of cell culture media. We realized this technology could solve the same problem all lab grown meat companies face.
Given our mission to singlehandedly kickstart the next agricultural revolution, we decided to pivot and focus on enabling the entire industry to succeed. Our cell culture media is affordable, scalable, and fully customizable to meet the specific needs of individual cell lines, from pork to kangaroo, and everything in between.

LayerCIToronto, ON, Canada
Instant staging servers for every code change
Traditional CI approaches need you to mix Dockerfiles with a big yaml blob to define the actual pipeline.
Layer turns this pattern on its head - we extended the Dockerfile to make it specifically for testing:
- It's only one file, so you can write CI configurations without looking at docs
- Our runners are fully featured VMs, and we take memory snapshots instead of just the filesystem so you can restore a configured Redis instance from a previous pipeline.
Benefits:
- We're a developer laptop in the cloud: your tech stack can come in any shape
- Get a unique link to share the frontend changes for every commit - we'll spin up the environment whenever it's requested, so you don't have to pay to keep them up
- CI runs significantly faster because you can set up your environment (e.g., `docker-compose up -d`) once, and rewind to that snapshot for every following pipeline.
- It's easier to onboard team members because they just have to read the single Layerfile to understand the whole CI process (incl. how to install everything)
- Debugging is easier because you can enter a web console into the last snapshot up to a week after a test passed or failed

MicroEval will help you create modern, helpful performance reviews.
It’s the day of your annual performance review. You’re nervous, and rightfully so! After this meeting you’ll know whether or not you got that raise, if your work has been acceptable or if you should start looking for a new job. No one likes them. In fact, we didn’t even like them...that is until we decided that they didn’t have to be this way.
Why shouldn’t performance reviews be helpful? Why shouldn’t they help you improve and grow your skillset? Exactly what we thought.
Inspired by personal experiences, our team came together to help transform the performance review process into a worthwhile, meaningful and easy process.
Who are we to take on this challenge you ask?

No Lean Season
A bus ticket out of poverty
No Lean Season reduces the negative effects of seasonality on the poorest in rural agricultural areas by enabling labor mobility that increases incomes. It is a new program that they are testing in Evidence Action Beta's portfolio, based on rigorous experimental evidence.
They give a travel subsidy of $20 to very poor rural laborers so they can send a family member to a nearby city to find a job during the period between planting and harvesting. This is the time in rural areas when there are no jobs, no income, and when families miss meals. This seasonal poverty affects 600 million people around the world.
With a temporary job during this 'lean season,' households are are able to put an additional meal on the table for every member of the family each and every day. That’s 500 additional meals during the lean season.

A platform to help reduce incarceration quickly and permanently
Recidiviz is a non-profit technology company based in San Francisco, CA. We build common, open source technical infrastructure to help the criminal justice system end mass incarceration and focus on ongoing iteration towards better outcomes.
Criminal justice data today is inefficient and ineffective: researchers, advocates, policymakers and practitioners each need funding and time for data collection and cleaning (for almost any data at all), and most data collected is too stale by the time it’s compiled to be useful.
Recidiviz has built an open-source platform to ingest data from across data silos, link it, standardize it, and expose it in usable formats to the ecosystem. We’re building some of our own interventions on top of this platform and working with other non-profits to use it to power research at scale, inform agency decision-making, motivate policy changes, and monitor their impact.

Spero FoodsOakland, CA, USA
dairy reinvented from plants
People want plant-based dairy. But, today, plant-based dairy is prohibitively expensive due to the use of nuts as the primary ingredient.
I created Spero (sperofoods.co) because I wanted everyone to be able to eat clean dairy alternatives that actually taste good. So, I leveraged my background in engineering, chemistry, and art to develop Spero's patent-pending formulations and brand.
At Spero, we make dairy from seeds.
Why seeds? Almonds/cashews (nuts), which comprise the majority of the dairy alternatives industry today, will never create cost comparable products with dairy because they are too expensive and they're hard to scale. They take too much time, space, water, and human labor. Seeds are 7-8x less expensive and grow 50-70x faster than nuts.
Spero owns exclusive rights to the technology needed to transform seeds into dairy alternatives. Not only does our pending-patent cover novel processing techniques for cheeses, but it’s comprehensive for all dairy alternatives, including milk, creamers, yogurt, and even eggs.
By using truly scalable ingredients and cutting-edge technology, Spero will be the first company to make plant-based dairy cheaper than traditional dairy products. Spero will be the first company to make dairy alternatives mainstream.

Sticky problems are ubiquitous. Surface fouling due to ice, sludge, snow, bacteria -- even human waste! -- leads to problems across industries. Car sensors don't work when contaminated with mud or snow. Barnacles on ship hulls reduce fuel efficiency. Ice on airplane wings is hazardous. While each industry has its own unique problems, they all require regular cleaning, repair, or replacement of their surfaces to address surface fouling. They therefore share a common pain: surface fouling is expensive! Our coating prevents surface contamination and the associated consequences.
Currently our coatings work best on glass, metal, and ceramic surfaces.

AI that tells mining companies where to mine to maximize profits
The mining industry drills narrow holes in the ground called drillholes to identify how much gold is in a ground at any spot. These holes are expensive so the industry uses statistical interpolation to predict what's in between these holes. Stratum replaces these traditional methods by utilizing deep learning to better predict both where to best drill and how much gold is in between these holes. This technology is not limited to gold and has been demonstrated to work on other metals, including base metals like copper. Based on Stratum's current pilots, our technology is projected to create ~10M in annual value for the average mine.

Like water, the flow of data from water utilities is both measurable and manageable. Valor helps utilities transform complicated data into simple solutions that can make a big difference. Some call it advanced water utility analytics. We call it all in a day’s work.

Automated security and compliance
Vanta simplifies the complex, time-consuming, and tedious process of preparing for a SOC 2 audit.
**How it works**
We’re automating security and compliance, starting with SOC 2
1. Connect your tools and infrastructure
2. Customize Vanta to your company
3. Fix items on your “to do” list
4. Complete an audit with an AICPA-certified auditor
**What we do**
We started by building the simplest way for a company to prepare for a SOC 2 assessment.
We started with SOC 2 because it was the most common way for an internet business to prove its security. In the course of building for SOC 2, we built out a suite of security tools that every internet business needs: laptop management, account monitoring, employee onboarding and offboarding, cloud infrastructure configuration, policy documentation, and more.
Over time, we’ll add additional certifications (HIPAA, ISO) and partner with industry experts to bolster the ways a business’ security is proved. We’re just getting started.
Our goal is to demystify internet security to the average person, equipping beginners with sane defaults and growing them into security-savvy principals who can explain how their company protects customer data and why their business is worthy of your trust.

Medical device that provides a more effective, less invasive…
Forty million men in the US and over 500 million worldwide suffer from urinary obstruction related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The majority of men will experience symptoms of this disease at some point in life. BPH, also known as prostate enlargement, leads to urinary straining, frequency, urgency, and sleep disruption. Despite the high prevalence and significant quality of life burden of BPH, established treatments are limited to drugs, which have limited effectiveness, and surgery, which carries a high risk of sexual side effects. The Zenflow Spring is a small implant delivered in the urologist's office in a simple procedure that provides quick and long-lasting symptom relief.

Patient-derived 3D tissue reconstruction models for preclinical…
zPREDICTA is developing organ-specific, physiologically-relevant 3D cell culture models providing a 1-to-1 reconstruction of human tissues. This is the only available 3D culture approach that comprehensively accounts for the major components of the cellular and extracellular tissue microenvironment preserving the critical interactions between a tumor and its surroundings. Clinical study data demonstrate the high correlation between drug efficacy measured in our platform and the clinical response. The ability of the zPREDICTA platform to reliably predict clinical outcomes offers superior compound attrition management, empowering researchers to exclude ineffective compounds while selecting agents with a high probability of success in the clinic.
Our approach is compatible with any drug class, multiple tissue/cell types and a wide variety of readouts. Our customers are using these models for efficacy screening of anticancer compounds, including immuno-oncology agents, evaluation of mechanisms of drug resistance, the rescue of failed drug candidates, assessment of off-target toxicity, and a multitude other applications.

ZuddlHyderabad, Telangana, India
Zuddl helps large organisations host conferences online
Zuddl lets large organisations create conferences online that can go live in minutes. We reproduce all aspects of a physical conference from one on one networking to expo showcases.
Existing online conferences often feel like a one-way webinar where attendees have no impact on the outcome. It might as well be a pre-recorded video. On most platforms, all online events look the same. It’s easy for attendees and speakers to forget what they’re attending. Many customisable platforms that do exist take weeks or months to get your event up and running, we do it within minutes.
At Zuddl, we’re building out a library of templates for all of the configurable elements of our conferences. You can build off of existing templates and get your event up and running within minutes. By mixing and matching our different event zones, you can reproduce all aspects of physical conferences online. Discussion tables facilitate organic group networking with easy switching between different tables. The expo zone can be used to showcase partner and sponsor booths. The backstage zone helps you run dry runs to ensure smooth event execution. With Zuddl, you can create fully branded conferences with engaging experiences.

We generate synthetic data for computer vision models.
At Zumo Labs, we generate synthetic training data for computer vision models.
Computer vision is the essential technology that powers the products of the future: autonomous vehicles, smart retail, robotics, smart fitness, security and vision-based analytics. These algorithms require huge amounts of training data. This data is currently collected and labeled manually; a slow, imprecise, expensive process that is rife with bias and privacy issues.
Zumo Labs solves all of these problems (and more!) by creating feature rich synthetic training data in the cloud: cheaper, faster to generate and iterate on, covers all the edge cases, and has no bias or privacy issues.
Computer vision companies can spend 600k a year getting the data they need to power their products. This is a serviceable market of $3B which has grown 60% per year in the last 2 years.
