About the role

The opportunity

At ZBiotics, we make genetically engineered probiotics that improve daily life. As a group of motivated, yet down-to-earth people, we are fueled by two things: a love for science and a commitment to being people-first. GMO products like ours, designed to benefit individuals rather than corporations, are the future. As the first to market, we believe it’s our duty to set a high bar for product quality, safety, and transparency for others to follow.

In 2019, we launched the world’s first genetically engineered probiotic: a 15mL probiotic drink designed to break down the alcohol byproduct that leads to rough mornings after drinking. Since then, ZBiotics continues to grow year after year. With new, completely unique products on the way, our team is growing. We’re looking for people as excited as we are to build this new category of consumer products.

This year, ZBiotics is getting ready to launch its second product: a genetically engineered probiotic, powered by the same technology as the first product, but with an entirely new function and benefit related to the microbiome and gut health. Specific details about the product will be discussed in the interview process. \

Your impact

Your first priority as Sr. Manager, Product Marketing and Brand will be to guide marketing through the launch of our second product and the transition from a single-product brand to a multi-product branded house. You will report directly to the CMO and collaborate in a close partnership with Product Management to achieve these goals. Through a combination of market research and testing, strategy, messaging, and content development, you will set direction for how ZBiotics presents itself and each of its products to consumers and the public.

Not only will your work elevate ZBiotics and bring our goals closer within reach, but it will redefine how U.S. consumers see and understand genetic engineering and GMOs.

  • By month three, you will know the ZBiotics brand inside and out, have made yourself a go-to for consumer insights, and are executing on Product 2’s go-to-market plan.
  • By month six, you’ve proposed launch messaging for Product 2 and updated the brand guide with messaging adjustments for Product 1 and the ZBiotics parent brand.
  • By your first year, under your leadership, Product 2 is ready to soft-launch, our brand strategy is clearly defined, and our capabilities now include content marketing and PR.
  • By your second year, you have shaped ZBiotics’ brand reputation into something bigger than the sum of its products and you are leading marketing strategy for Product 3.

Competency and experience must-haves

  • You have led marketing strategy on multiple consumer-facing products in your career.
  • Motivating and leading others, regardless of reporting lines, is your superpower.
  • You value and seek out quantitative and qualitative data to inform brand direction.
  • You are a talented communicator, storyteller, and, if needed, a capable copywriter, too.
  • You understand enough about PR and Partner Marketing to manage experts in both.

Experience nice-to-haves

  • You have brand management experience in CPG (consumer packaged goods).
  • You have used interviews, focus groups, and surveys to learn about customers before.
  • Product marketing, product management, or market research are in your background.
  • Marketing scientific or technical products to consumers is something you’ve done before.
  • You have experience in performance advertising, lifecycle marketing, or eCommerce.
  • This isn’t the first time you’ve been the first brand-specific hire for a growing company.

This role is for you if …

  • Developing product positioning and brand strategy is your happy place.
  • Brand work that optimizes for growth and efficiency is a challenge that excites you.
  • You embody the ZBiotics values of Humanity, Integrity, Citizenship, and Science.
    • Humanity - We always put people first, especially our customers.
    • Integrity - We communicate honestly and deliver high quality always.
    • Citizenship - We are inclusive and committed to doing what’s right.
    • Science - We question our own assumptions and adapt to new data.

Benefits

We believe in a life well-lived. ZBiotics offers competitive benefits for a life outside of work, including: health / dental, 401(k) matching, a minimum PTO policy (with unlimited time off), 16 weeks fully paid parental leave, a home office stipend, transit benefits for those in the San Francisco Bay Area, full-time work-from-home policy (if desired), and access to award-winning coworking office space if located in or visiting San Francisco.

This position will have the option to work remotely day-to-day, have full access to award-winning coworking offices in downtown San Francisco, and will need to attend occasional events.

We encourage you to apply …

At ZBiotics, we value our differences, and we encourage all – especially those whose identities are traditionally underrepresented in tech organizations – to apply.

About the interview

Interviewing at ZBiotics

We’re excited to meet you! Here’s some more information about our interview process.

Our goal is to get to know you and to give you the opportunity to get to know us. We’re a small but mighty team of curious individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Our conviction is that we do our best work as a team by leaning into what makes each of us unique.

That’s why we want to make things as comfortable and transparent as possible, so you can show up wholly yourself throughout the process. If there’s anything we can do to be more accommodating, or if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Here’s what interviewing at ZBiotics looks like…

Phone Screen

We’ve seen your résumé and think there’s potential for a good fit. This is an informal, 30-minute call to introduce ourselves and make sure you understand the company and the job. Our goal is to answer any of your questions, and check that this position is ideal for what you’re looking for.

We’ll provide some background on the company, give some details on benefits and culture, and ask questions that help us fill in the blanks around what we might have missed or didn’t see in your application. We’ll also cover our current timeline and ways to connect if you have any questions.

Hiring Manager Call

The hiring manager will review all of the candidates we’ve screened, and for candidates who align strongly with the role’s requirements, we’ll set up a video call.

Candidates in this phase will meet for 45 minutes, and discuss the position details and expectations. We’ll learn a bit more about your relevant expertise, how you work, and how you interact with others. We’ll ask for some examples of how you’ve approached challenges in the past, and answer any additional questions you have about your potential manager / team.

We encourage you to take video calls in a quiet location to avoid potential distractions. Please feel comfortable to present yourself as you would onsite, in a casual office / lab setting.

Additional Interviews

Candidates that are the best fit for the role and the team will be scheduled to hold video calls with more of the team. We expect up to two additional calls with other team members, who will get to know you and cover how you might engage with other departments. Depending on availability and timing, this may also include a one-hour call with two or more team members for a less formal meet-and-greet.

Timing

We aim to wrap up an interview process in under 3 – 4 weeks, from screening call to presenting an offer. If you have any timing conflicts or competing offers, please keep us informed and we’ll be sure to keep communication as transparent as possible.

About ZBiotics

ZBiotics is a consumer health startup pioneering the category of genetically engineered probiotics. Our team of PhD scientists takes traditional probiotics and enhances them – giving them powerful new functionalities that improve human health and enrich daily life. We incorporate these new probiotics into our own branded products and sell them direct-to-consumer (DTC).

Our first product – the world’s first ever genetically engineered probiotic to go to market – helps people feel better the day after drinking alcohol by breaking down acetaldehyde, one of alcohol’s toxic byproducts. We launched this product in August 2019, and since then we’ve successfully developed product #2, which will launch within the next year.
