About the role

We are looking for an experienced engineering leader to lead and grow our Infra team, which oversees the following areas:

  • Core Infrastructure: reliability and scalability of a few core infra systems at Zip including Elasticsearch, Celery, Redis and Nginx
  • Data & Storage: RDS & a standard DB entity accessing layer on top, Kinesis/Kafka, streaming infra, and observability across the tech stack
  • DevOps: system provisioning & scaling, k8s maintenance & stability, CI/CD, testing infra, and local dev setups
  • SRE: process and tooling for incident response and management

You Will:

  • Inherit a team of 4 engineers, and grow the team to 8-10 engineers in 2023
  • Identify talent gaps, attract and hire top talent, and grow individuals
  • Set and be responsible for Zip’s overall reliability, performance, and engineering efficiency goals
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership on critical areas for the team, as well as set the team's long term technical vision and goals
  • Own and drive execution toward clear objectives with measurable key results
  • Design and implement processes to help the team scale and be productive, while also allowing for agility and speed
  • Facilitate and drive a rigorous and effective incident response and management process for Zip's engineering team
  • Collaborate closely with other engineering teams at Zip; help influence long term technical strategies, and help to identify and solve product pain points
  • Promote a strong culture around excellence within engineering


  • 8+ years of software engineering experience
  • 2+ years of managing technical teams
  • Proven track record of successfully running an Infrastructure team with high reliability supporting a critical product
  • A history of success attracting top talent and managing and growing engineers
  • Experience with some of the key systems used at Zip, such as Elasticsearch, RDS, Celery, Redis, Kinesis/Kafka, K8s, nginx
  • Experience working with DevOps systems and testing frameworks
  • BS or higher, in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding (e.g. physics or math)

Nice to haves:

  • Experience in SaaS or FinTech industry
  • Experience designing and driving horizontal product infrastructure frameworks
  • Experience working at a small company with diverse responsibilities
