About the role

Hello, we’re Instrumentl.

We’re a mission-driven startup helping the nonprofit sector to drive impact, and we’re well on our way to becoming the #1 most-loved grant discovery and management tool. To help us get there, we’re hiring a Senior Product Designer to build innovative technology for our nonprofit customers.

About us:

Instrumentl (YC S16) is the best platform for nonprofits and grant writing consultants looking to grow revenue. We help over 3,000 organizations win more grants by bringing discovery, research and tracking to one place.

Our charts are dramatically up-and-to-the-right 📈 — we’re cash flow positive and doubling year-over-year, with customers who love us (NPS is 65+ and Ellis PMF survey is 60+). Join us on this rocket ship to Mars!

About the role:

As a Senior Product Designer at Instrumentl, you'll play a pivotal role in transforming the efficiency of our enterprise clients, so they can dedicate more energy towards their life-saving missions. You’ll be our 3rd full-time designer, working closely with your co-conspirators to create enterprise magic:

  • Emily, Growth Product Designer
  • Hope, Lead Product Designer
  • Ishita, Head of Product and leader of the pack
  • The enterprise mission team (Angela, Co-Founder and Senthil, Engineer)

Get to know us at instrumentl.com/about! We can’t wait to meet you.

The Instrumentl team is fully distributed (read: no office!). For this position, you can design from anywhere in the continental U.S. or Canada as long as you have 4+ hours of overlap with the Pacific time zone. As a close-knit team, we want to have (virtual) face time with you, watch your cat roam in the background, and take polaroids together in FigJam.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Seasoned, full-stack designer 🦾: You’re no stranger to product design. You’ve led the process from concept to completion, owning entire product areas and shipping solutions to real customers.
  • Innovator 💥: You’re excited to blaze new trails and utilize new technologies to help nonprofits discover grants, submit proposals, and manage fundraising portfolios.
  • Growth-Oriented 🌱: You thrive in ambiguity and are inspired by endless possibilities. You’re committed to self-awareness and growth.
  • Strategic Problem Solver 🧠: With a keen eye for detail, you dig deep to identify root causes. You sift through user research to discover opportunities and frame problems. Your ability to derive meaningful insights from complex data directly informs your strategic design decisions.
  • Collaborative Owner 💬: You break through department barriers to seek feedback and iterate, ensuring a high bar for quality and alignment with business objectives.
  • Generalist 🤹: You like to work on a variety of projects, always seeking fresh challenges and the ever-evasive “cool side of the pillow.”

Must-haves:

  • Experienced ⭐**: You have at least** 5 years of professional experience (or equivalent) in Product Design.
  • Customer-obsessed 💗: Deeply fascinated by humans, you seek to understand people’s needs and behaviors. Those observations shape your design decisions.
  • Passionate 💥: You possess a keen interest in building impactful products at early-stage startups.
  • Solid portfolio 📖: Your case studies show your expertise in UI/UX design and problem-solving.
  • Tech skills 💻: You’re already learning everything you can about emerging technologies like AI.
  • Enterprise software design 📚: You’ve worked on enterprise/B2B software in previous roles.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Design Systems 🧩: You develop and maintain design systems to ensure consistency and efficiency. Preferably in Figma!
  • Mentorship 🧑‍🤝‍🧑: You mentor junior designers and contribute to the growth of the design team.
  • Sector expertise 📚: You’re knowledgeable about nonprofits, grant management, university prospecting, or any other relevant fields that intersect with Instrumentl.
  • Coding 💻: You have some proficiency in HTML and CSS/Sass.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Competitive salary and equity ($140,000 - $160,000/year)
  • 100% covered health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (50% for dependents)
  • Generous PTO policy, including parental leave
  • 401(k)
  • Company laptop + stipend to set up your home workstation
  • Company retreats for in-person time with your colleagues
  • Work with awesome nonprofits around the US. We partner with incredible organizations doing meaningful work, and you get to help power their success.

What to expect:

Instrumentl is evolving rapidly. You’ll always have new challenges and opportunities to grow in your role here - you won’t be bored! You’ll be an early member of our small but mighty team, playing a huge part in shaping our culture for the years and teammates to come.

At Instrumentl:

  • We’re customer-focused. We routinely seek feedback from our customers to improve the Instrumentl experience for everyone. Our first company value is "The customer is the hero" and we mean it.
  • We love to experiment. Our team is constantly generating new concepts and iterating to see what works - ideation and experimentation are essential here. "Bend the curve" is another key company value.
  • We’re approachable and collaborative. Everyone has a voice, and we’re all building Instrumentl together.
  • We kick it every day with some of the nicest people in the world. No joke, our customers are often on the front lines educating kids, saving endangered species, and restoring watersheds. In helping them take advantage of Instrumentl’s technology, you’re helping them move the world forward.
