About the role

Living Carbon is a public benefit corporation with a mission to responsibly rebalance the planet’s carbon cycle using the inherent power of plants. We believe that gigaton scale CO2 drawdown will only happen if solutions are both beneficial to the environment and profitable to landowners. We’ve developed photosynthesis-enhanced seedlings that capture carbon faster on underperforming and degraded land. In addition to improving carbon capture rates we are also working on extending the durability of nature based sequestration. We’re backed by some of the most prominent investors in Silicon Valley including Temasek, Toyota, Felicis Ventures, Y Combinator, and Chris Sacca of LowerCarbon Capital.

If you believe that climate change is the defining global emergency of the century and want to join an ambitious project that’s working on a biological solution, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking for someone who’s excited to be part of a mission-driven early-stage company. As our Scientist- Plant Regeneration Systems, you will play an essential role developing tissue culture regeneration systems in woody species. You will be spearheading development of regeneration systems while carrying out other experiments to achieve company goals. A successful candidate will have extensive experience with plant biotechnology lab experimental approaches, with inherent fundamental knowledge of plant biology and demonstrated successful application in a plant tissue culture. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the company’s strategic goals and think creatively about how to move quickly and solve problems.

Responsibilities

  • Design plan, and execute research experiments relating to woody plant tissue culture regeneration systems.
  • Manage projects for system development while routinely delivering quality results at production scale.
  • Collect, maintain, and analyze detailed records of experimental and production data
  • Develop, optimize, and execute protocols in a technical manner and while developing SOPs to guide others.
  • Perform lab functions vital to project success, such as media making.
  • Coordinate within team / department through effective and timely communication to ensure project goals are met.
  • Ability to adapt to experimental workflow while developing new skills.
  • Nurture the desire to work in an exciting and rapidly evolving work environment.
  • Provide unique perspectives and collaborate to creatively solve problems as they arise.

Qualifications

  • MSc, PhD, or BSc with equivalent experience in plant biology, plant science, cell biology or related fields and experience working with plant biotechnology systems.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with plant tissue culture regeneration systems is required.
  • Experience with somatic embryogenesis, especially in conifers such as pine or other woody species, is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and creatively solve problems effectively and efficiently in plant tissue culture.
  • Proven capacity to manage multiple experiments simultaneously and familiarity with LIMs systems.
  • Fundamental knowledge of and subsequent application of plant regeneration techniques.
  • Independent, hands on bench work to achieve the aforementioned responsibilities.
  • Experience with production-scale management and quality control is desirable.
  • Excellent organization, with strong oral and written communication.
