About the role

Metriport is accelerating healthcare innovation by modernizing medical data infrastructure through the world's first open-source platform of its kind.

Companies building the future of healthcare like Circle Medical, BillionToOne, and Tono Health, use our API and dashboard to access and exchange comprehensive patient clinical data with all major healthcare IT systems in the US, in seconds.

We are looking for a seasoned engineer who is looking to make an outstanding impact on nation-wide health outcomes, and motivated by working on problems at scale (think millions of queries and TBs of medical records).

About us

We're a tight-nit technical team that's always pushing to ship as much quality product as we can, as fast as we can, for our customers.

We all have equity in the company, making us all owners who are working to move the needle. We all have an entrepreneurial spirit, and do not treat this like a 9 to 5, since we are passionate about what we do - it's an amazing feeling to have a direct impact on the standard of care in so many healthcare verticals... from primary care, to hospice care, to oncology, to COPD care, to prenatal care... the list goes on and on.

We operate in a dynamic and fast paced environment with a relatively flat structure, where a lot of ownership and responsibility is given to every individual. Everyone's voice is heard, and everyone has the ability to influence the direction of the ship - from both the product and business perspective.

We have a quickly growing customer base, and plenty of runway. We're backed by world-class VCs and angels: Nicolas Dessaigne (co-founder Algolia), David Lieb (co-founder Bump, now Google Photos), and Rich Aberman (co-founder WePay) to name a few.

About you

In a nutshell, we're looking for an experienced "generalist" engineer with the following specific qualities:

  • You have an olympian-level work ethic.
  • You are confident in your ability to build scalable systems across the full stack, and people usually come to you for technical guidance.
  • You believe you can solve any problem that comes at you, and don't shy away from diving deep into areas where you may lack domain expertise.
  • You have a strong sense of ownership over your work, and have demonstrated ability to lead others.
  • You care more about the end result and delivering value to a customer, rather than what new and frilly tech is being used under the hood for a given feature.
  • When someone scopes out a project with an ETA of 3 weeks, you ask yourself "why can't it be done in 3 days?".
  • You bring a "crazy hacker that really believes they can change the world" vibe.

What you'll be doing

Every day, you'll be contributing to major developments in our open-source platform, and shipping product directly to our many customers. The changes you make are mission critical for our customers - accuracy, reliability, and performance of the medical data we deliver is paramount.

Got ideas for how to improve our medical data ingestion engine by extracting structured clinical concepts from millions of unstructured medical documents by leveraging the latest advancements in AI/ML? How about more advanced domain-specific clinical medical record summaries? Think you have a quicker way to searching through tens of thousands of endpoints for a patient's medical records from various hospitals, labs, and clinics in the US?

You'll be given the reigns to bring your ideas to life, working backwards from what our customers need from our product.

Our tech

Currently, we use the following core technologies:

  • Node.js / Express / React
  • TS / JS / Bash / HTML / CSS
  • PostgreSQL / DynamoDB
  • AWS / CDK / Docker
  • VSCode / Git / MacOS
  • Mirth Connect / HAPI FHIR

... and you'll also get a bit of exposure to Python, Java, and whatever other tech comes our way as we build out the next major pieces of our platform.

About the interview

  1. Initial intro call: This is a quick informal call with one of our founders to get to know you a bit, and understand your motivations for considering the position.

  2. Culture screen: This is a second call with both of our founders where you'll be asked more detailed questions to determine a strong culture fit.

  3. Technical evaluation: To spare you the pain of Leetcode-style questions, we'll give you a practical take-home coding challenge where you'll fix a bug, add a feature, and create corresponding pull requests, for a couple example issues from an excerpt of our OSS code base. This should only take a few hours, and during this time, you'll be able to communicate with our team on Slack - just as if we were already working together.

  4. Meet the team & code review: When the coding challenge is complete, we'll setup a call with the rest of our technical team where we'll go over your solution, and give you a chance to meet the team as well.
