Hey all, I’m Josh, Co-Founder of Overlord, with my friend Eddie. We’re aiming to build the Holy Grail of productivity apps - an AI agent to replace self-control.

Imagine you hired someone to stay awake 24/7, sat behind a big computer screen, monitoring you - knowing where you are (GPS), what website you’re on (Mac integration), what you spend money on. They can take actions: texting/calling you, charging you money, blocking your iOS/Android apps, blocking websites on your Mac, texting friends if you’ve fallen off the wagon.
Overlord has been in a closed beta for about a year, and has had hundreds of thousands of messages sent to it by users. It’s specifically meant to be weasel-proof, so we’ve put a lot of effort into making sure there are no easy workarounds. Our target users are the type of people that have their friends manage their Screen Time passcodes, and have web blockers all over their Mac.
Here are a few examples of what Overlord can do:
No processed food: “Each time I spend money at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, make sure I send a receipt (with the exact amount spent to ensure I’m not cheating) and it must not have anything processed on it. Also no purchases from any dollar pizza store. If I do, charge me $50.”
Morning routine w/ screen blocking + charging:_ “Call me to wake me up at 7am, and block my apps at this point. I must send a photo of my fridge at 7:05, a video brushing teeth by 7:10, a photo of a coffee by 7:20, and a photo outside by 7:30 (unblock my phone at this point). If I miss any of these, call me, then if I am not telling you I’m taking action on the phone, charge me $1.”
Getting to work immediately:_ “Once I arrive at the office, I must start a 2hr focus session on my Mac within 15 minutes. If I exit this, or spend more than 10 mins distracted or inactive total, charge me $5 and text my co-founder that I’m distracted. Block all distracting sites.”
Asks:
Happy New Year!
Josh
