What type of person are we looking for?

  • Values clear, open communication. We are a remote first company. We see clear, thoughtful, and regular written & face-to-face communication (including a willingness to give & receive feedback) as a fundamental engineering skill and one of the strongest predictors of future engineering impact, not just a nice to have, and we hope you do too.
  • Has experience.  You have solid experience shipping production level code, ideally some of which you’ve spent in startups. You have experience operating autonomously in projects from inception to maintenance. Bonus points if you have experience owning technically challenging and demanding cross-functional projects and/or a record of identifying valuable projects, communicating the strategy for them, and executing on them autonomously. Cherry on top: you’ve mentored early career engineers.
  • Demonstrates a growth mindset. You have a track record of growing beyond your frontend engineering muscle and continued desire to do so. Some examples include:
    • You’ve worked with customers directly in the past to understand their needs.
    • You’ve owned responsibilities in the product design process to create mock-ups, facilitate discussions with visual aid or have created and/or extended a design system.
    • You’ve contributed to a backend system in the past to unblock yourself or better understand our entire architecture and APIs.
  • Is Biased to Action.
    • You are a self-starter. You don’t rely on others to tell you what to do while you are working, and you have a fast learning trajectory. Taking initiative is an imperative quality to possess when working at a startup.
    • You are outcomes driven. You see the value in setting clear objectives, planning strategically, focusing on the impact of what you’ve built, and adapting to any changes that may be required. You enjoy bringing projects from 0 to 1.
    • You are decisive and thoughtful with your actions. You take pride in what you build, and you hold yourself accountable for the quality of your contributions

What will you be doing?

  • Working directly with the founding team, eye care professionals and lab partners to define the product and engineering roadmap.
  • Developing, iterating, and refining our existing ordering, payment and customer service offerings from inception to implementation and maintenance.
  • Building a culture of technical excellence by:
    • Establishing patterns, practices and technologies to improve our reliability, feature iteration speed, development experience, and knowledge sharing
    • Championing projects
    • Not being afraid to think outside the box

What qualifications are we looking for?

At least 4-5 years of experience with technical experience in the following areas:

  • React, Cypress, Javascript or Typescript, CSS, HTML

Bonus qualifications:

  • Familiarity with and/or experience with Python, DynamoDB, AWS, GCloud
  • Familiarity with and/or experience with frontend tooling such as Webpack, React Query, Tailwind, Radix, Storybook, CSS-in-JS, SCSS
  • Good at Dad jokes

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $130k - $150k
  • Equity: All early employees will be given an initial equity grant. Details to be shared in the interview process

About the interview

SpecCheck Interview Process - Frontend Software Developer

  1. Initial non-technical interview - This meeting is for us to get to know you better as an individual, and to allow us both to gauge whether there is mutual interest in continuing our hiring conversations. No prep work is required - just come in ready to talk about yourself. Approximate interview time: 30 minutes
  2. Initial technical interview - Our engineers will ask you two complete a few small tasks to gauge your proficiency in pertinent frontend technical skills. Approximate interview time: 45 minutes
  3. Technical “On-Site” interview - Our engineers will dive a little deeper into your engineering background and learn more about projects you’ve worked on, skills you’ve used, and how you’ve contributed to the teams you’ve worked on. Approximate interview time: 45 minutes to one hour
  4. Technical “On-Site” #2 interview - Our engineers will have you participate in a debugging session on a real project. You will get the opportunity to suggest improvements to the code base, as well as outline a high level technical plan regarding how you would implement new features to the project.
  5. Final interview - This meeting will be reserved only for those who have made it to the final stages of the hiring process, meaning we are very serious about extending a job offer. It will allow both parties to ask any outstanding questions and align on expectations for the role. Approximate interview time: 45 minutes

Following the final interview, a candidate will be chosen and a job offer will be extended.
