About the role

Role Summary:

We are looking for a Laboratory Operations Manager with a robust combination of scientific acumen, leadership, and physical ability. This role is crucial for managing our lab's daily functions, maintaining environmental controls such as fume hoods, ensuring biosafety, and leading our team towards achieving groundbreaking diagnostic discoveries. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biosafety, laboratory management, and a readiness to engage in a role that demands both intellectual and physical capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and develop laboratory operations, ensuring security, compliance with biosafety regulations and maintaining strict environmental controls - including effective operation of fume hoods and other critical equipment.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly update laboratory safety protocols and procedures, focusing on biosafety and environmental control measures.
  • Oversee the handling of diagnostic samples and biohazardous materials, ensuring all processes are performed according to safety standards.
  • Lead a team of scientists and technicians, providing mentorship and development opportunities, especially in biosafety practices and laboratory management.
  • Collaborate with R&D and quality assurance teams to support the development and validation of diagnostic tests, maintaining a focus on safety and compliance.
  • Manage laboratory budgets, procurement, maintenance schedules, and vendor relationships for critical equipment, including environmental controls.
  • Lead and support the implementation and maintenance of laboratory IT systems, including data management software and other technological solutions to streamline lab operations.
  • Oversee the installation, calibration, and maintenance of lab equipment, with a particular focus on electric and photonic devices used in diagnostics. Ensure all equipment is functioning at optimal levels for accurate and efficient diagnostic testing.
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits related to BSL-2 standards, biosafety, and environmental health and safety (EHS) compliance.

Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in managing a BSL-2 laboratory preferred, with a proven track record in handling biohazardous materials and managing environmental controls. Additionally, candidates with a successful history of establishing a laboratory from the ground up will be highly regarded.
  • Experience in diagnostic laboratory operations, with a deep understanding of the technical and safety requirements specific to diagnostics.
  • Specific training in biosafety and laboratory management.
  • Strong technical skills in IT, including experience with laboratory software, databases, and network management. Proficiency in electric/photonics, with the ability to troubleshoot and maintain related lab equipment, is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership skills, capable of managing and motivating a diverse team in a high-stakes environment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Knowledge of FDA regulations, ISO standards, and best practices in biosafety and environmental controls.
  • Physical capability to manage demanding situations, with a background that supports the ability to respond dynamically to operational needs.
  • Additional experience in roles requiring physical strength and situational awareness (e.g. high-level athletics, law enforcement, or military) preferred.
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field preferred.
  • A startup mentality, adaptable and eager to engage in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
